Hey guys,
I am new to the site. I just bought a '98 2wd from a soldier in my platoon. He's a typical rich kid and sold me the truck for next to nothing because the truck has had one problem in 11 years (I am the second owner).
Anyway, I rescued the truck, but here is the problem. When you try and put the truck into gear (5spd manual), it's like there is nothing connected.
When the truck is in neutral the engine revs smooth with no noise or squeeking. When you push in the clutch there is a definite noise that sounds like the flywheel is covered in sandpaper.
It isn't leaking that I can see and I don't see any evidence of leaking beyond a small rear main seal leak.

Any help with this would be great. This is a perfect truck (not a scratch on her) other than this problem.

Should I just get a new tranny or should I consider something else first?

Does it 'feel' like it goes into the gears when the truck is not running?

Going off your description, I would guess something is up with the throwout bearing and or pressure plate. Maybe a busted finger or busted spring on the clutch disc..

I would pull the tranny and take a looksy at the clutch.

it might me either the master cylinder or the slave cylinder for the clutch. probably the slave. they had issues with them from 98 to 2000 or 01
