5r55e 4x4 trans problems

I've got a 1997 4x4 4.0 ranger with 102,600 miles on it. the trans works fine in R and 2, but in 1 or D it just does nothing. I was just wondering if anybody has any idea of what might be wrong? thanks

update on problem

after driving the truck today 1st gear is the only one that doesn't pull, any idea what that might be

Is the OD light on dash flashing?

no, there are no lights on just no 1st gear

does anyone have an idea what might be wrong? Could it be the separator plate

I would take it to tranny shop or somewhere to get a scanner put on it and drive vechile with scanner on it to see what the computer is commanding for gear. By all rights if its commanding first and starting in second there should be a gear ratio error.
