Swapping a 1993 5.0 into my 1991 2.9L. The biggest confusion I am running into is transmission related. Up until this point I have been following the guide on TRS and I saw I need an adapter if I am to use my original 5 speed manual. However I'm not sure what clutch I need to buy, or if it's even worth using my old tranny. I also want to keep 4x4 so that's another issue. Any advice at all would help, I'm pretty lost on this.

M5OD out of a 97-03 F-150 with a 4.2l is what a lot of people recommend for a manual transmission. Pretty sure the T-case in those is what you want too. I wouldn’t try to use an adapter to bolt up to a Ranger trans, especially a 91 2.9 trans.

*edit, corrected engine size. Also apparently I forgot about the cable driven speedo issue, but you can use an older F-series t-case for that. 80’s or 90’s OBS would bolt up. An NP205 bolts to the trans too but it’s too big to fit without modifications.

Will the M5OD fit without a body lift? And would I need to get a new driveshaft? If so, could I use the driveshaft out of the same truck or would that be too long?

You want one for a 4.2, not the 4.6. You also need the engine seperator plate from a M5ODR2 equiped 4.9/5.0/5.8 truck or very carefully enlarge the starter hole on the 4.0 plate.

Length is pretty close to the same as the A4LD/M5ODR1, you can cross check against those although you will get some variance because no two swaps are the same.

T-case out of a R2 truck will not have an output for your speedometer, you need to go older for that.

I knew it was 4.something :dunno: :icon_rofl:

Thanks for correcting and adding what I was missing

F-150 driveshaft would probably be too long, but I would be willing to get a driveshaft cut down again. I had to have the driveshaft for my green Ranger cut down. I actually tried saving a little money and did the cut myself and just took it to a driveline shop for balancing. They said it was pretty close and tacked a weight on where the original had fell off. Shop was a FleetPride, used to be Keystone Spring back in the day, basically a heavy truck shop that does springs and drivelines. Think it cost me around $100 for the balance. If I had them cut and weld, $200. That seemed reasonable.
