5.0 swap 5speed?

Hello all, I just recently joined the website as I have purchased a 98 step side regular cab 2wd ranger. $200 is a bargain considering all I have to do is replace the motor which isn’t terribly expensive. Everything else on the truck is perfectly fine it was well taken care of. After seeing that a 5.0 swap is pretty much plug and play with minor modifications im thinking I want to go that route but I want to keep it a 5 speed. Which transmission/s will “bolt up” to the motor and ranger? Thanks in advance for the input!

97-04 4.2 M5OD-R2 fits the best.

Some people have used a T-5 but I think the shifter and clutch actuation can get more complicated.

The engine that is close to "plug and play" will need a tune to live with a manual.

I think there is some differences with engine mounts too. The info is on here just it wasn't pertinent to me so I don't exactly know the details.

I am in the process if putting an '04 M5R2 into my '85 though.

You are going to need to purchase some custom motor mounts to install it into your coil spring ranger.
Explorer info
98 down had a return fuel system (Two fuel lines one return one supply).
99 up had return less fuel system (Only one fuel line).
98 up had pats( can have tuned out or wire it in. All the wires are the exact same colors in your ranger even though you do not have pats)
99 up speed sensor on rear axle
98 mechanical speed sensor in tail shaft.
Plus everything 85 said.

There's a long discussion at explorer forum where a user did a 5 speed R2 swap in a second gen explorer. Should be identical for info you need. Like 85 said, the biggest pain is getting a tune on the computer to make it happy not talking to the 4R70W. That'll add the cost of an SCT and paying for a tune with that part removed.

If the sct tuner is all you need for the tune I already have one. I do have eyes a a running and driving 99 explorer for $650..(frame damage) so I’ll have access to all parts necessary. The Ranger already has a 5 speed manual in it but is originally a 4 cylinder I’m not sure if that makes tuning a difference when putting a beefier trans in

You are going to have to tune the automatic programming out of the explorer pcm for when you put the standard behind the 5.0. While you are doing it just have pats tuned out also. You will not be running the 4 cyl pcm with the 5.0 so I am not sure what you mean by the ranger already had a standard in it. Other than the tunnel is already set up for a standard.

It's also convenient to already have the pedal and clutch hydraulics there. Otherwise, it doesn't help you. You'll have to reach out to a tuning shop once the physical work is done, but that part should be easy.

The 98 ranger as it sits has the original 5 speed manual gear box in it

We understand that, but the only way that helps is to give you a clutch pedal and hydraulic system to use.

99 up speed sensor on rear axle

F-150's were similar, they went to the speedo being driven off the tone ring in the rear axle.

Not 100% positive how compatible the drive is. I know the parts inside are not the same as a mechanical gear/cable drive on the F-150.

So for 2wd you would need a 97-98 trans with the sensor hole.
