total nub question
i noticed the other week that the lights in my 4x4 switch whent out.. so i took the switch out of the dash and noticed there are no light sockets or lights anywhere on the switch. how do i replace the lights in the 4x4 switch? do i need to buy another one? i thought everything in the dash in 04+ where led's.. i looked the switch over real well and i cant see where the lights actualy plug into the switch. 2WD, 4X4 High, and 4X4 Low dont light up neither dose the line on the switch to tell you what your in. my 4x4 works fine though its just the lights.. am i missing somthing? lol

is your truck shifting into 4wd?

if the shift motor isnt shifting the t-case, the lights wont light up.

just the pretty switch dosent light up.. im sure its a simple fix just not sure if i have to replace led's 194 bulbs or the whole switch to make it light up again. and to clarify the 4x4 and 4x4 low still lights up on my cluster.. and YES it still engages my tcase < :)

sorry about that....i should have read closer.

as far as i know, the bulb inside the switch is non-serviceable.....meaning the whole switch has to be replaced...a ford dealer should be able to verify this for you.

FYI, rangers still use regular incandescent bulbs (inside and out).

Yes it is serviceable. Pull your bezel off and look at the back of the switch. It should be a big circle and a little circle sticking out the side. Push your thumb down onto the small circle and turn it left. Flip it over and the bulb and holder should fall out. now very carefully pull the buld straight out of the socket. place the new one in and reverse the steps to reinstall it. I can get pics if needed.

sweet thanx man.. im assuming there is only one light that lights the knob and the 2wd,4x4 things above it?

do you know if its a 194 bulb or am i going to have to go to ford to get a special bulb?

When the lights went out on my 1989 B2's push button 4x4 switch the bulbs had to be gotten from a radio shack. They were VERY tiny, and did not have a normal base.

They are the 194 bulb. It uses one bulb. The hardest part is getting the bulb out of the base.

ok just took a look at the switch and got the bulb out.. the bulb is not a 194, and i dont think i can pull the bulb out of that base it looks like its burnt in there.. the bulb is a really small raido bulb like stated above.. where can i get a bulb and base for that switch? you think ford is gona rape me for that one?

Probably the dealer. I know what you were describing, I think everyone else was thinking you meant the "4WD" indicator that lights up when 4x4 is engaged, and not the back lighting for the switch.

You may try Radio Shack, but you will have to be good at soldering.

it is a 194 bulb, I know because I have replaced it. It look as if it should not come out of there but It will. I had to use a needle nose plires very very carefully to pull it out. If you break the bulb your never gonna get it out. I have heard that you can buy the base from Ford for around $12.

And it is one bulb that lights up everything in that switch.

funny thing is when i pulled the light out and put it back in it now works.. must of been coroted contacts on the light base. it works now, but a 194 bulb is 2x the size of this bulb i wana say this bulb is maybe 2cm wide x 4cm long.. defently not a 194 bulb i can take pics if you want. im not callin you a lier but i know for a fact its not a 194..

and jspafford, malydeen knows what light im talking about because he told me exactly how to take the bulb out..
