4x4 push buttons - are they backlit?

I just bought a '94 xlt with push button 4x4. After a bunch of work I've finally got it running, but I drove it for the first time at night, and noticed I can't see where the 4x4 pushbuttons are. When 4x4 is engaged there are the amber indicators next to the buttons, but when I'm in 2HI, there is nothing. Are the buttons supposed to be backlit so I can see them, or are they just dark at night?

Sorry for the dumb first post. I've been looking everywhere and can't find a picture of someone's dash at night that includes the 4x4 buttons.

Hmm.. I'm almost certain it's just the amber indicators next to them that light up, I think the words are painted on solid plastic buttons? Dunno. My truck is all the way outside and I haven't driven it for about a week! lol I'll check in a bit.

my 86 b2 is like this and my buddy's 96 full size bronco was the same. just the amber light.

on my 91 ex they are back lit and amber to the side

To those who said they are not backlit... Your incorrect. They are infact backlit. If you take the switch out, which is extremely easy, there is a round hole on the back with a grey flat plug in it. Twist the plug out and there is a tiny white bulb with a green plastic cover over it. Goodluck finding the bulb. I had a hard time 10 years ago. I think I got mine at Radio Shack.

The 4x4 and LOW RANGE should be lit at night.

I have a spare switch in the garage. Not sure if the light works in it. Just an FYI in case you some how damage yours. Sell it to you cheap.

I was replacing my burnt out dash lights last night and thought I would check out the 4x4 switch light, so today I'll be searching where to get a replacement.

Ford only sells the switch, that of course includes the bulb. I'll post up the results of my quest for a new bulb. Wish me luck! (One of my stops will be Radio Shack)
