4R55E to 5R55E swap working?

Awesome, my daughters boyfriend has a 96 with the tranny out for the second time. He will be glad to know this! Thanks for sharing.

Okay well i did it. It works very good. The only thing i needed to switch was the neutral safety switch. every thing else bolts up for those who want to know. i have it working in my truck. the 5r55e works in place of a 4r55e

Holy crap! This is the info I was looking for!

Well, almost...I have a 4r44e and am wondering if the 5r44e will work in place. I'm almost convinced now. My truck is a 99 3.0L 4x4 and I can get a new tranny that fits a 3.0L 4x4 (2001-05), for really cheap!. Can anyone else confirm or am I just being an idiot. Thanks guys!

96 ranger Automotic trans

I think i am going to need a new transmission soon, or at least some work.
What should i do????

This is what is going on:
1.It used to slip out of gear when it was not warm on acceleration, doesnt do it much anymore, but it did the other day after driving around with 5-600 pounds in bed.

2. 3rd gears feels a little shaky at times, like its grinding, or slipping.

3. It will up shift when it should down shift.... a little early in 3rd.

sounds like i will be able to put in a 5r55e in it. Sock for this truck is the 4r55e i will have to check to make sure.

would i be able to put a 94, trans.
What years will work for this ?

It be sounds like the 5r55e would a nice upgrade. looking forward to your comments

yes i reccoment it. the 5r is stronger inside.

you amy be able to put in a 94 trans.. as long as there the same thing... go back to far and you get a al4d but im not sure when that switched...... i would do a 5r myself. its stronger.

I would also like to thank bent bolt..... i was iffy about this but your info made me just do it. saved me alot of $$$$$$

4r44e, 4r55e, 5r55e

So just to make sure this is all clear.

A 4r55e will replace a 4r44e?

What about the 5r55e that was made for the 4.0L

Will the 5r55e replace a 4r44e?

i replaced a 4r55e with a 5r55e so if a 4r55e can replace a 4r44e i would imagine it would work. dont belive me tho....

Glad to hear it worked for you..
I did the same conversion a few months ago..
Everything bolted up great..
They seem to be the same garbage transmissions though...
I bought a Electronic Shift Control Module from B&M a Few weeks ago for $60
Works Great!!
If your Ranger is lifted with OS Tires...Say maybe 33s
It would most likely extend the life of your trans greatly..
Just a thought...
Good luck!!

OOhhh I take that back i did the 4R55E..
HaHa My Mistake...

Basically, yeah.

Essentially all the 4R/5R trannys are similar. Electrically they'll all interchange but it's the bellhousing/ tailhousing differences that prevent swapping say a 4.0l 4x4 trans into a 3.0l 2wd truck.

Quickly, ignore the 4R/5R designation and look at the end part. The "55" is stronger than a "44". Swap a "55" in place of a "44" but not the other way 'round .

98 Ranger 4x4 3.0 4r44e trans, burnt rear one way clutch. 140,000 miles
Trans shop est . $2000 ++++++ (you know the story)
truck is only worth $3,000
I decided to spin the roulette wheel for $200 and found a crash yanked 5r55e complete with Transfer case from a 2002 4x4 4.0. The guy said it had 40,000 when he rolled it and it sat in the garage 4 years.
My odds may be good because it looks like new inside the pan and all the lines and wires were snipped sort of confirming it was a crash yank out and the guy seemed pretty honest
I read on a ford ranger website that I can swap bell housings and everything fits right up

I welded up a rig for my floor jack to hold the trans and got the trans out and I am in the process of swapping bell housings right now. Took me about 8-10 hours to get this far.
I got a new front seal , is the pump hard to get out of the bell housing to change the seal ?
It looks like another PITA

anyway my questions are pretty basic if you can help thanks.
Should I fill the torque converter with fluid and put the torque converter on the trans before i stab it back in ? then bolt it to the flex plate
should I buy a new torque convertor ?
also , anything special to do when bolting the pump back up ? I am being careful with the little O-rings on the bolts and re-using the gasket which stayed in place and looks clean
can I put the 3.0 final drive splines and pump still bolted to the bell housing right in the other trans ? everything seems to MIC out identicle

everything looks identicle externally from the plugs to the linkages
I got a shop manual and will look up the bolt torque

I gotta lot of respect for you mechanics, this is a very difficult job and my first auto trans , I've done about a dozens clutches and even repaired stick shift trans (pre-90's , did a clutch in a Kenworth all by myself once, but the auto trans is strange and these newr trucks are whacky to work on.
Wish I had some help !

I'll buy the beer

sorry to bring a thread from the dead but I have a 01 4.0 4x4 ranger with a 5r55e dead trans. I do have a brand new 4r55e out of a 99 mazda b4000 4x4. Is this swap possible. This is strictly a daily driver work truck. thanks in advance
