4R44E compatibility

I'v got a 4R44E transmission on my 2.3L, 2WD. I'm converting to 4WD, so I need a different trans (obviously). I know the 3.0L has 4R44Es, and the 4.0L has 4R55Es, or something. Anyways, my question is, will a 4R44E from a 3.0L direct-swap to my 2.3L? I know the 2.3L 4x4s are a little hard to find (at least around here), so will it work?

2.3 and 3.0 have unquie bellhousing patterns.

2.8,2.9 and 4.0 share bellhousing patterns.

The tranny bellhousings are removable and can swap between trannys.

As to your specific question, I would suspect yes but that is nothing more than a hunch.
