well...1.9 alh or the later 2.0 vw are outstanding platforms for a 2wd. the 4l60 oreven a 3 speed would be ok.
with a stock 1.9 keeping your 4r55 will probably be fine. getting the signals from the diesel to run the stock pcm is not likely easy....but utilizing the edis it may be possible to hack it together with just driveway ingenuity.
this allows you to run a gm trans....with a vw engine the 4l60 or 700 r4 would be easy. run a truck megashifter and conversion joint on the modified gm drive shaft or vice versa on the ford.
you can have a all mechanical setup with the 700 and if you want an auto likely the best bet.
Also,
How do I choose my shift points with a 700r4 if it’s not computer controlled? How does a megashifter work? Is it like driving a manual without a clutch?
Changing the governor springs and weights will change the shift points. They sell kits for it.
No, it's not like driving a manual... it's like driving an automatic with a floor mounted shifter. Yes you can manually shift gears, or just put it in drive and go.
