Still stands by my word for the most part... Had three of them and they were all turds.
Had 2 351M's HELACIOUS TURD there boy. The deck height and assembled widths are much taller and wider then a 302. Parts must be more expensive here I reckon for both then other places ? They are far and few between around here. Most have been melted back down or used as boat anchors round' here. Lets not confuse a 351M with a 351 though folks. I think a few may be making them one in the same.
Takes work to make either of them worth a chit though honestly, where as a good little 302 is a dime a dozen and easy to build and interchange.

You never had one tuned right, nor had the opportunity to drive one of the first in the 71 model year. All the later ones needed to run was a simple cam change and a bigger 2 bbl carb. I took one in a 77 F100 and swapped in a Summit P/N 5200 cam and swapped on a Holley 500 2 bbl carb, added headers and it was a tire melting beast that ate the newer Dodge HEmi pickups for lunch.

Even dad's old '80 with stock everything and gawd knows how many miles was a pretty good puller. Two 4500lb tractors on a triple axle trailer that probably weighed as much as another tractor, pulled it like a dream. Now the clutch is shot and the engine isn't really far behind, so it doesn't pull much anymore.

My 400 in my dually has a cam, headwork, headers, edelbrock intake and 650 carb, and supposibly pistons, but im not sure on that one (i didnt build the engine), and from a standing start it will roast all 4 of the back tires (dually) in 2nd and still squeel them into 3rd.

I had a 351M in a 77 F150 4x4, with a 4sp, it wasnt a barn burner by no means, but the sumbitch was more then acceptable.

later,
Dustin

We built one for my buddies 77 F150 nothing fancy. Comp cam 268H, matching valve springs, 3 angle V-job and milled .020, Edelbrock performer, Holley 600 vac sec, screw in stud and guild plate conversion, roller tip rockers, 030 over boar with stock replacement pistons, rebuilt C6 with a tow master converter and 350 gears out back in the 9" and that truck was fast and hell and would tow his fishing boat, camper and all our gear up the moutains to the lake with out even knowing we were going up hill, Yea it was a torque master. We did this about 25 years ago and with all the new technolgy on cams, intakes, carbs and ignition systems I could only wounder what the hell that truck would have been like today. Well anyways the 400 Ford remains as one of the best engines Ford ever built a true workhores!!!
