4 LOW

Thanks all for the replies. I think there was only 1 person that had a '19-20 Ranger that replied, and he didn't answer that was what his Ranger did in 4 LOW. I see ya' points, but my questions were for the '19-20 Rangers. Anyone have a '19-20 Ranger that acts this way in 4 LOW ???

Acts how in 4 low? The laws of physics and the principles of gear reduction and torque multiplication don't care what year your truck is. Ford engineered some safety into it to try to prevent drivers from breaking it.

Yup programmed safety feature. Some modern trucks will reduce engine power in first gear to keep from ripping themselves apart. Preventing the trans from going into higher gears in 4 low is the same principle. Ford doesn't wanna replace trucks under warranty from people trying to drive 60mph in low gear.

My manual says to shift into fifth at 18mph in 4lo...

Counterpoint... A 2.8 is not the same as a 2.3EB.

150lb-ft x 2.3 or whatever low range is is different than 280 lb-ft x 2.3 or whatever low range is...

My 2. 8 in low had about the same torque as a 19+ in high...

I always liked low range for backing trailers or boat ramp usage. The old creeper 1st 4-speeds seemed similar in 1st and reverse, todays reverse gear ratios seem too high most of the time.

Don't worry most people have never used low range in any of their vehicles, and probably have no idea how to get it into low range in the first place LOL. 2WD or maybe 4Hi if they're lucky....some never use the 4WD at all but bought it so they could fit in with their neighbors and buddies at the bar.

Used to use low range all the time in my F250 when I was loading hay on the trailer, throw the truck in 1st transfer case in low, never locked the hubs, it would crawl along at a good pace that allowed you to easily throw hay on the trailer and stack it.

Our LMTV trucks in the military limited us to 5th gear in 4WD, no 2 speed transfer case, just single speed, so high range limited us to 5th, it was a 7 speed Allison Automatic. Many new vehicles will limit your speed in low, to keep you from destroying things. Probably tells you in the owner's manual .

Ok, so I talked to a co-worker (another tech) who has a 19 and uses his 4x4 fairly regularly, he confirmed that the transmission being limited to 5th gear in low range is normal and intended operation. Says his does the same thing.

In this day and age of computer controls Ford is not going to allow you to do something that will outright break your truck. This is going to be a normal condition for all Rangers this generation. If it did differently you’d have a problem.

Mine is same. Only put it in 4 low just to make sure it worked. But I was on a easy trail and never got to 5th. Did however notice in the only mud hole that it did hold in gear longer like in sport mode. Love this damn truck haha
