4.0L sohc swap

Just figure out what the weak points are for your chosen powerplant and take steps to mitigate them. Often times, preventative maintenance takes a big chunk out of the problems. For the SOHC, the special one for it that I’ve found so far is to change the timing chain tensioners at 70,000 miles before they go bad. That and be OCD on the regular PM.

What about the guides that break and fall apart?

There are people who know the work arounds for that. I never had those engines but I know there are things that can be done.

Generally a result of weak/worn tensioners. The guides fail from a loose chain slapping against them. That doesn't happen if you change them on time and keep up with oil changes.

All I'm really after is something more reasonable power wise for it. It's the original 2.9l it's tired wore out ya know. It hates turning 31s and I'm eventually gonna turn 35s at some point. A good 200-300 hp would be just fine 250hp 300ft/lbs. And just dead reliable hold 70mph down the highway ya know.

How much oil does it use? It runs well otherwise? A gear change in the diffs would bring back the get up and go you lost. You should do a gear change with the 35's no matter what engine you use. That lightens the load on the whole drivetrain. That is the engine, transmission and driveshafts. It will increase the load on the axles.

If you are spinning something faster you have the same power, just more speed and less torque. The gears in the diffs will change the higher speed/low torque to lower speed/high torque to turn the large tires.

It honestly leaks more oil than it burns. But I don't drive it all that much. Really the biggest reason I want to change it a modern powerplant easier to get parts in the long run. My 2.9 runs like hammered ass. I have done all manner of crap to it.

Injectors tps iac all new vac lines plugs wires cap rotor you name it almost.
Still has that dam low idle miss weird high idle most of the time. Valve clatter like no other. It'll hold like 2k rpm while braking untill completely stopped. Then It'll drop.

I'm just over it man. Thing just pisses me off everytime I get in it. Lol

I have to admit my 2.9 I had in my 86 had a hot rough idle also. Always had to slip the clutch a little bit to get it going. But after that it always ran great with lots of power. I never have been able to figure it out and get it repaired. I replaced a lot of parts also.

I guess the easiest thing would be to like freshin it up new bearings and seals etc a set of headers and give petroleumjunkie a call for his megasquirt tune
