4.0 trans swap A to M

Rick, that's not really a transmission issue at all. Most Explorers have, well, stupid differential gears. The acceleration you feel is the product of the overdrive gear with the gear ratio. And if you believe metalmacguyver's numbers, the two versions have the same OD ratio....

Some of those things came with 3.08 gears. In an overweight 4000 lb brick.
yes it has 3.55's lke my ranger did but don't the fm-146's have a slightly lower overdrive gear?you woulden't notice it with 4.10's anyway.

 thats such a life saver i was gonna give up on the swap idea lol. so the new shafts only apply to a bronco II huh. the trans i'm lookin at gettin is in a 89 2.9 bronco II. what trans do you think it is? i have not herd back from him yet about it
your a4ld is the same length as the fm146 in the bronco you're talking about and the m5od tranny.thats why you don't change driveshafts.the m5od has no tranny pan, thats what you are looking for under a donor truck.

alright... is the fm146 a COMPLETE waste of time and money? whats so bad about them? i'm on a budget at the moment thats why i'm looking for a manual instead of rebuilding yet another a4ld

lets just say that the fm-146 is barely adequite for a 2.9l,behind a 4.0l...:black_eye:

FM146s (and other Mitsu FMs) suffer a design flaw that kills almost every input bearing. Every FM146 is over 15 years old, and almost all of them fail the same way, so getting the good used parts you need is expensive and difficult.

I might consider using an FM146 that I got for free (but I doubt it), but never behind anything bigger than a 2.9L.

here is the thread i have going on the swap now.....every question you have will be answered in that thread.....
http://www.therangerstation.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6106

when i am done with the swap i will have a complete write up on it....

i saw that thread. didn't know how much i could use from it because yours is so new compared to mine lol.

ECU... had do i need to do to convert my ECU from auto to manual... where should i look? you can't program these can you? ODB1...?

you will still need to convert your computer to a manual tranny computer.......that way you wont get transmission trouble codes......

and as far as mine being newer, the only difference is mine has the OBD II.....
