My credo
if it aint broke dont fix it if it is broke upgrade
im doing a 4.0 swap into my 87 ford ranger an ive ran into a problem with my manuel tranny idk if i can swap tailshafts out of my auto into my manuel so i dont have to use the transfer casr my ranger is a 2wd not a 4x4 any help be much apreceated

What, which trans is which?

Also, Manuel is a Mexican guy with a bad 'stache. Manual is the type of transmission that has a clutch and must be shifted by hand.

the 4.0 is a manual an the 87 ranger has a 2.9 auto

Ok, well here is the deal. You cannot just flop the extension housings and make a 2wd a 4x4 or vice-versa. There are differences in the output shafts that require the trans to be pulled completely apart and the shaft to be changed out.

If this transfer case is manual shift, I would just leave it on there. It isn't that heavy and helps from time to time.

i dont want the transfercase cause this is my custom rig ive already got it lowered an it well only be in my way an be dead weight so all i was wondering is if i can use the tailshalft from the auto 2.9 tranny in the manual 4.0 tranny

You still need to get a 2wd output shaft. It would be better to try and find someone wanting to swap to 4x4 and trade transmissions.

Too bad your far a way i have 2wd manual trans and need a 4x4 manual trans
could trade you the output shaft and tail housing shouldn't be to bad on shipping pm let me know

No auto and manual parts are not interchangeable.

The T-case weight 65lbs.

Having it in a 2wd truck gives you a low range for doing things
like backing up at reduced speed and other "neat tricks"

There are occasions where it is "useful" to being able to drive in 2wd LO and having your engine hit the rev-limiter in 5th gear before you hit 55mph (like at the Fairgrounds at Carlisle PA?)
