I’m reinstalling my engine into the pickup. I’m wondering how I connect the torque converter to the flex plate. I’ve read some things that say that’s the last step after the bell housing bolts and motor mounts, but that seems wrong to me. I’m just looking for some advice.

Do you mean the torque converter?

This post confuses me...:icon_confused:

Yeah, that’s what I meant, I fixed it. Multi tasking is not my strong suit apparently

doing the torque converter to flexplate last is a good way to check the converter is seated properly and isn't binding the pump.
with the bell housing bolted to the block the converter should move freely, but of course only the tiny distance of the studs in the holes.
if it easily clunks in the holes you're good.

do not use the bolts to force the bell housing and engine together.
if it needs mechanical force it ain't right, that's when the converter is not seated.

sweat, swearing & pain are expected. these things can sense frustration so be patient.

Ok, thanks a ton. In my head bolting the bell housing up first would cuz the torque converter studs to bind against the flex plate. Do I just pull the torque converter forward then?

You have to line up the studs with the flex plate while you mate the engine and transmission, there is only like 1/8" of room on the shafts so either turn the torque converter or crank while mating the engine and trans until the studs line up while you get the bellhousing lined up...

NO. well, not a lot. pulling the torque converter forward will disengage it from the pump. the converter must stay engaged with the pump.
when the bell is mated to the block there will still be some clearance between the converter and flex plate, but only 1/16 or 1/8 inch at most.
that is not enough the disengage the converter from the pump (internal splines/drive)

seat converter in transmission, turn it until it engages the pump.
as the bell approaches the block spin the converter to align the studs.
seat the bell against the block, bolts tight
at this point the converter studs should still wiggle in the holes, move in/out a small amount
nuts on studs to secure the converter.

Spent 2 or 3 hours yesterday messing around and couldn’t get it lined up. Needs to get done this week, as I’m using my buddy’s cherry picker and he moves out of state next week.

Also does the spacer go on the transmission side of the flex plate or engine side? I have it on the engine side but want to double check.

Engine side is the only way it does anything.

Just needed to doublecheck that. Not anybody local I can bounce too many things off
