4.0 reliability vs 3.0

All conditions the same, the Vulcan 3.slow will outlast the 4.0 by a long shot. Maintained like any engine should be, it is one of the most reliable engines in existence. Any master mechanic of 20+ years will agree, unless they just have an axe to grind, or just a liar.

Agreed, one reason I would give it consideration if I was to ever buy a newer Ranger. 4cyl performance with 6cyl economy though...

I have a 2003 FX4 Level II ( 4.0 SOHC W/4.10 s, automatic) all stock with 131K on it. I've also owned 2.8, 2.9 and a 4.0 all push rod with stick. I like the 5R55E trans probably because I'm more shiftless.
The fuel mileage of all of these has been really close to the same.

The 3.0 is a gas hog for sure but not worse than the 4.0. I gotta disagree with the 4 cyl performance comment tho. I have owned 3 2.3 engines and they are NOT near as powerful as the 3.0. I'm not saying the 3.0 has any power to brag about, but I sure wouldn't attempt to tow my 3500 pound camper with a 2.3. ... at least not at any speed or distance.

i loved my 93 with the 4.0 ohv , ive got a project '97 with a 3.0 right now, its driveable but have to start in 2nd cause 1st gear is out, then shift the drive above 35 (4r44e) ive had 2 2.3 rangers, 1st one was great on mpg and not too bad on power, but one i have now is horrible, gets about the same mpg as my 4.0, actually get better milage driving it like a 4 speed and not useing overdrive gear at all, and thats even with stock tires and 3.73's. overall id just as soon have a 4.0 ohv. the ohc version of the 4.0 is a higher rpm engine, and 'fixed' or not, i dont have to want to worry about that timing chain issue.
