4.0 radiator in a 2.9?

I suppose you do have a point AD Most of the info that I know about the thickness of these radiators and where to find them came from your mouth anyway, I guess it just got rearranged over time.

Here's a comparison pic of a 4.0 auto VS a 2.9 auto rad (which is twice as thick as a 2.9 manual rad).

Thanks for the info, I just bolted in a 4.0 Auto rad (1994 explorer) into my 2.9 Auto (88 ranger), used my 2.9 shrouds, hoses etc, it just dropped right in. The only thing I had to do was drill two holes in the bottom of the shroud to zip tie the bottom in place (the top bolts lined up, but the bottom clips were different.)

I just did one of these on Friday and it took less then an hour... that included the trip to get the new coolant. Just like above it dropped right in.

94 Explorer radiator

I bought an aftermarket radiator for 138.00 with a lifetime warranty for my 88 2.9. It's similar to the 94 explorer with automatic. It drops right in and has an angled lower outlet. I had to cut a small amount from the upper stock hose to clear the alternator belt but it was easy. It's such an improvement over the factory junk Ford calls a "radiator". It's no wonder so many 2.9 heads crack. I could not even run the A/C on a hot summer day prior to the swap. I like my truck but Ford needs a serious "Bitch Slapping" for some of thier bone head engineering.

I've seen 4.0 auto radiators in rangers that were about the same thickness as the 2.9 auto radiators before. I thought that the 4.0 radiator out of an explorer with an auto trans and air conditioning was the only one that was over 2 inches thick.

+1

It's possible to buy a 1 row 4.0L radiator for automatic transmission that was not equipped with A/C. Doesn't matter how it came from the factory; that was years ago. The important thing is that someone doesn't go and buy the wrong radiator. Just make sure it's the A/T A/C version.
