My money is that you have a walker exhaust. They're eerily quiet.

More than likely. Most walker mufflers are designed to be quiet above all else. If you want to even out the loudness, look into a Flowmaster. They flow a little better as well.

Keep in mind, dynomax is just a loud (and is made by) walker. I've never had good luck with them on jeeps, and they tend to be restrictive.

Nothing wrong with walker products on a daily. They're a little restrictive, but unless you're building for power, they work fine.

I had a Heartthrob dual cat back that was basically just two glass pack tips before the Dynomax. The Dynomax ultraflow is just as loud and seems to flow just fine. It's been on for 4-5 years now and still looks great under there. Unlike the rest of my undercarriage. I had a Borla on my 02 Liberty and that was a nice (expensive) system.

I had a Heartthrob dual cat back that was basically just two glass pack tips before the Dynomax. The Dynomax ultraflow is just as loud and seems to flow just fine. Borla is edging on top shelf stuff, up there with thrush IMO

I went with the Flowmaster FlowFX on 2.5" pipes because it was on sale, and I wanted my rusted out mess of a truck to sound ricer-y ?

Some will tell you that vehicle manufacturers often cheap out on exhaust systems, and are known to hang restrictive exhaust systems on vehicles to save money on production costs.

I say there's no reason to change out new parts if they work.

So, here's an article that explains some details on exhaust sizing. It's a good place to start, but by no means lists all arguments and theories around exhaust systems:

My 98 3.0 doesn't have a muffler at all. Have a bent Y attached to the converter, then two straight out polished tubes sticking out in front of the tire, Lightning style. It's not as loud as you'd think, but it is noisy.

My 3.0l is a bit louder than normal. I reworked the exhaust a while back.

Unless you have the power to need a bigger exhaust I never got the point of trying to make any vehicle louder... it serves no benefit.

The humorous answer : If you think your engine is too loud, you need either a louder muffler, or a louder stereo .

Exhaust sound levels / tone is highly subjective . If your search the internets for user reviews of ANY setup , you will find approximately equal numbers saying that XYZ is both way too loud, And way too quiet .

As far as power / efficiency , I will ham handedly attempt to paraphrase David Vizard . Simplified rules of thumb :

Pipe size per se doesn't mean anything , it's the CFM that matters .

2.2cfm / horsepower will give essentially zero power loss compared to open exhaust .

2.0cfm/hp only drops a cpl % , you probably would never notice in street driving . By 1.8-ish cfm/ hp , restriction is noticeable .

Much more flow than 2.2cfn also has downside , from reduced velocity reducing the scavenging effects , with in turn reduces power and efficiency . ( DynoMax does publish the cfm rating for each of their individual sku numbers of mufflers )

Having looked into this for my ( delayed ) '94 3.0 , and possibly upgrading the wife's '99 5.0 Explorer , I reached a few thoughts .

A 2in system , with 2in Turbo muffler would be zero losses on a 3.0 , and less than 5% on stock 4.0 L . If you were compelled to optimize on 4.0 , you could either use a higher CFM ( generally louder ) 2.0 in muffler , or a larger diameter Turbo * Muffler * . Ie pipe dia stays the same , and use a cone shaped adapter on both ends of a 2.25 or 2.5in Turbo muffler .

* For ME * , I Hate the tone of Flowmasters , Like the tone of Turbo's . YMMV . Everything else kinda depends upon the specific overall situation .
