I'm planning on taking a road trip From San Diego, to Cabo San Lucas. It's about a 1000 miles down. I want to hit all the good hot spots on the way down, and I'm looking for a new ranger with 4wd so I can go confidently. I found one with a 4.0 automatic. Any one know the avg MPG of a 4wd 4.0 automatic? freeway and in town? I'm planning on trading in my 3.0 2wd auto for it, and paying the difference, and it's probably something I'll want to keep for a while... It also has about 98,000 miles on it. Any one know the typical mileage where these things start to take a dump? Truck looks clean...

Also, any one have any helpful tips on the long way down to Cabo??? Any one know of the good places to stop at?

the 4 liters autos get anywhere between 17-19
my neighbor has a 06 an gets an average of 18 with his...
ive got a 95 an i get 16 with it. but its not entirely stock.

My Explorer with a 4.0 sohv gets about 21mpg on the highway. Not sure if it'll be the same.

Not sure about highway mileage but I averaged 14.9 after my first fillup. That's about 60% city driving with 4Hi on about 70% of the time (6.4 gallons to 95.6 miles). I would think when the roads aren't icy/snow covered if I were to take this thing on a trip I could get 20+ mpg. Sorry if this didn't help much. I've only had the truck a little over a week.

wow i dont know what im doing wrong. i only get 12-14 with my 98 ranger and i dont drive like an ass.

My '91 4.0 4X4 5-speed made 21mpg when it was stock. With 31" mud tires and a 3" lift it would still get 20 most of the time. Around town: 13. I can't believe I thought 13 was okay then. My fullsize crewcab longbed diesel gets 18 around town and my Honda Civic gets 32 on winter gas and 38 on sumer gas. I wouldn't daily drive a 4.0 Ranger in my current mindset.

i know how you feel. im getting about 15 with my 93. going to get a tune up very soon though

I'm getting about 14~15mpg driving about average in cold weather (-5~19*F). During the warmer months I can get it up to about 17~ish.

I only got 15mpg with my last fill up (had the truck a couple weeks) it needs a tune up bad, didn't pass emissions, so I'm sure it needs o2's and plugs and wires cap and rotor and more...

what all is replaced in a tune up?
