Quick question. That 4.0 litre Mazda tranny will go into my '90 Ranger 2.9 using existing clutch setup and starter?

The tranny will bolt up, but the clutch line may be different, I don't know for sure..
And you can use the 4.0 starter if you use the 4.0 clutch and flywheel

Clutch line is the same, but you have to use a slave cylinder out of a '91 Explorer/Ranger 4.0.

The starter, flywheel, and clutch are all different and require changing if you swap in the M50D-R1 transmission.

Slave Cylinder goes by model year, not engine.

the slave used on a 1990 is the same back to 1988 and up to the end of 1992.

1993 uses a different slave cylinder.

If you get a 4.0 trans I'd really recommend using the 4.0 clutch setup (10" clutch instead of the 8-7/8" clutch you have now) the 4.0 flywheel (23lb instead of 18lb)
And the permanant magnet starter motor from the 4.0 manual trans (which weighs
half as much, produces 50% more starting torque and uses about half the current
to do it)

BUT that collection of 4.0 parts MUST be installed as a SET.

If you DO NOT want to use the 4.0 flywheel and clutch you can still
switch to a permenant magnet starter motor,... just use one from a
4.0 auto (which is different from the manual trans starter)
