4.0 a4ld 2wd to 4wd

Tranny went out, found a recent rebuild but is from a 2wd, can I take my rear portion off and put it on the back of the 2wd tranny and bolt it up.

2wd Tranny is from a 4.0 BII and mine is a 4wd Ranger 4.0

Not looking for a tranny to last forever but something for the net few months and the price is right.

Let mek now if I can change the tail piece, I've did it on Manual tranny's before but not certain on the 4wd.

If the 2wd transmission has a dummy xfer case instead of a generic tail housing, it may just require swapping out the xfer cases. I read somewhere that the BIIs used an empty Borg-Warner transfer case just to take up the space on a 2wd so they wouldn't have to use a different transmission or a tail housing extention. Not sure if that helps or not, but would love to know how it turns out.

The tail shaft and the housing need to be swaped. when swapping the shaft the trans needs to be fully disassembeled, also the pan and filter need to be swaped.

Almost all 2wd Bronco II's had the 4wd transmission in them with a dummy transfer case. You are correct as it was just an empty Borg Warner 1350 transfer case. However, some '90 model Bronco II's had true 2wd transmissions in them.

You can swap in the 4wd/2wd Bronco II transmission into your 4wd Ranger without a problem as long as you have the 2.9 in your Ranger as well.

Grr,

Tryingto get a straight answer from the guy if it has the dummy transfer case or not and he told me it was behind the one year they had the 4.0 in it...

I'm Not willing to take the tranny apart as mentioned above, I have a tranny with bad seals in it now, that I will just pull and put the seals in if it comes to that.

Looked and looked for a M5od in my local area to put in, only ones I can find are behind 3.0's and 2.3's

Another thing that I didn't read in your original post is that there NEVER was a factory built 4.0.

So if it is a 4.0 Bronco II, it has had the 4.0 swapped into it. More than likely it is a regular 2wd 4.0 transmission.

Ford DID make a factory 4.0 BII. They are extremely rare though.

No, Ford DID NOT make a production 4.0 Bronco II. The ONLY factory 4.0 Bronco II was a prototype vehicle that was predecessor to the Explorer in late '90.

Just remeber, you have a 4.0 and if you use an a4ld from a 2.8 or 2.9 it wont last long at all.

I think an explorer 4.0 trans would be your best bet.

Hmm, intersting, was under the impressiong that they had One Year run with the 4.0, regardless, I'm not going to get this setup now

i have a 1993 ranger with a 4.0 and a A4LD trans. I want to put 4x4 into my ranger since its 2wd now. i have a doner ranger its a 84 with a 2.9 5 spd and a bw-1350 and a d-28. is it possible for me to bolt this t-case to my 2wd trans...if so can someone tell me how, and how difficult it will be...Thanks
