3rd times a charm

tom morana is an option, yes. the only option. but truth be told, for the price you'd spend to stroke it, get his intake, a supercharger, and a tune, you're well over the cost of a smog legal 4.0 swap.

a 4.6 is a pain in the ASS in a ranger. 302 all the way. look at this pic below for reference, there is no easy way to fit the DOHC 4.6 (on the left) in a truck with an LT front end.

You can build the crap out of a 3.0l..

These is way more out there than a cheap programmer.

Tom Morana V6 3.0l

You can stroke it and run a M90 on it with mega squirt and I'm sure it will fly....

The problem is..... Money>End result

I'm not sure if you can get a smog ref to accept a 4.6 or 5.4 swap.. I am looking into it myself...

If not, I am going with a SBF or even a SBC...

I have a spare 3.0 I am looking to get rid of.. Its in awesome shape. If your looking to build on something a little bit it would be a good candidate..

Other things you can do to get a little more out of the 3.0 is to port match the intake, port and polish the heads, and of course headers.. (I am under the impression your exhaust manifolds are junk)

I was definitely looking into the swaps as someone recommended a 5.0 swap. only problem with CA smog laws is one of the requirements is that the engine be from the same year or newer and I have to pull all of the smog equipment with it including possibly the gas tank if they have certain emissions sensors. I am curious to know if the 4.6 and 5.4 can be swapped over as the 5.4 would be a pretty bad ass motor in a ranger.

Noob question here, what SBF and SBC?

The headers took a hit at some point and Im not sure which brand they are from but they were very thin walled so it led to a leak in them. Id rather get some heavier duty ones if possible.

You definitely have a point there as thats a wide engine, is that a 4.0 on the right?

Oh, damn that's crazy how a 302 is so much smaller than a 4.6 and thanks for clearing up the SBF. Since the Ford motorsare out of the question I may have to do the unthinkable and put a chevy in there or even worse maybe a Dodge Durango V8. But I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

The 4.6 isn't an impossability, it would just take a lot of work to make it fit. I say stick with FoMoCo! It'll never let you down.

Sorry about taking so long to get the pics guys, Ive been going through some personal issues as of late and it completely slipped my mind. If I can keep my head on straight Ill grab them tonight and try to upload them for you guys on here.

Those are the 4 best shots I've got.

As stated before
SBF= Small Block Ford / BBF= Big Block Ford
SBC= Cmall Block Chevy / BBC= Big Block Chevy

The two motors show are as followed in the picture above.
*Left: Ford's Modular V8, the replacement for the W motor, Production started in 1996
*Right: Ford's Windsor V8, also known as the W motor, last year in a vehicle was 2001

Just some fun facts for you.

I kinda figured what SBC meant after he explained what SBF was. Good to know the last year of the 5.0 was in 01 though. Ive been kinda playing around with the idea of throwing all sorts of engines in there once I have the time and money and a different truck for daily driving.

Looking through those attachments I posted, there isnt anywhere to mount a bump stop for the upper arms on it. It kinda looks like you could mount on for the lower arm but I would be concerned about it getting crushed by the coil over at full extension.

Out of curiosity how often have you seen that happen? Ive been around 4 different built LT Rangers both I-Beam and A-Arm and havent seen it happen yet. Also what options are there for a beefier aftermarket steering system?

it depends on how hard you beat the truck up and how old your rack is. usually, the remanufactured racks suck and love to blow up. but eventually no matter what if you have bigger tires or use your truck off road, the rack will start to leak and then have to get replaced. mine leaked for a bit then stopped (hopefully for good). as far as replacements, there isn't much except for going with a full hydraulic set up from some company like howe. the admin of DR has a hydro steering set up on his ranger with a camburg race LT kit and it's pretty bitching
