35x12.5's posssible???

well that would also be up to what size gears you had stock with the size stock tire.

In my application I had 235/75/15 (29") with 3.27 gears stock. Going to a 35" tire calls for a 3.95. So a 4.10 would work but with the xtra tire mass a 4.56 will be enough for my application.

If i was strictly offroad i would use 4.88's or 5.13's but it will driven 60-70 miles to some of our land.

Thanks for the help 4x4 junkie! I'm just going to order the 35's and see how they fit. If it's to tight i'll go to 33's.

3.27s suck hardcore even with stock tires, basing your gear calculations on that would be a mistake.

4.88s are the highway driving gears for 35s, 5.13 would be the "offroading" gears.

FWIW, I have 33" tires and 4.10 gears on my '94, and it's just adequate, nothing more. I regret not using 4.56 with my 33s (mileage would've been no worse either).

Anyway, glad to help out (as always) :icon_thumby:

No, I realize that (BTW, we have a gear calculator right here, too)

What I'm saying is 3.27 is way too tall of a ratio to begin with when you already have an overdrive transmission.
There is no mileage gain at all with those gears vs. say, 3.73, but the losses are everywhere (power/acceleration, longevity of the transmission (or clutch), etc).
Someone at Ford was smokin' some good crack or something

4.56 nearly matches straight up with what 3.73s would've been, but with the added mass and rolling resistance of the new tires, I'd go 4.88 (if it weren't for the 4.0L, I'd be telling you not to use anything less than 5.13 lol).

The 4.0L's best efficiency is at 2500-2700 RPM at 65 MPH.

35 weigh more than 29's(i know my half tread 33's bfg's at's weigh 72lbs each on stock ranger 15x7 rims.)

35's have more rolling restiance

your truck is going to be a larger brick cutting threw the air than when it was stock.

all these things take more power to get turning and to keep turning

trust junkie on this. 4:10s are going to suck with 35's even with the 4.0L and 5spd.

before I tore my truck down, 91 ranger, 4x4 5spd,6inch skyjacker lift. 4.56 gears, and 35's and 33's.

with the 35's it was ehhh ok but lazy. 5th wasnt useless, but it was on the verge, unless you were on total flats.but dont ask it to acerlate any wiht out droping a gear.(unless you were doing 75-80 then you could ask 5th to acerlate) got a avg of 15mpg with mixed driving.

33's and 4.56 has the same seat of the pants power as my stock 93 4x4 4.0L 5spd, with 235's and 3.73's

with 33s its peppy threw all gear's, even 5th, get slowed down to 50 on the freeway I can leave it in 5th and pull back up to speed with out any fuss. with the 35;s I would have to grab 4th on the flats or 3rd on a hill to get back speed in a timley fashion. I could leave it in forth on a hill but it was very slow to gain speed and I would have to dam near floor it.

with the 33's and 4.56; s I got a avg of 17mpg with mixed driving.I live in a area where there is lots of steep hills and long grades, drive the freeways at 70-75 on avg, sometimes 80 plus, tach sits at the better part of 3 grand most the time.

all stock 93 ranger 4.0L 5pd 4x4 3.73;s and 235, got a general avg of 19
had 80,000 when I got it, sold it with 150,000 on it

91 ranger 6inch lift 4.0L 5spd 4.56's out of round, never balanced 33inch muds
got a gen. avg of 17mpg
had 125,000 when I got it, has about 150 in it now.

91 explorer 4.0L auto 3.73s and 35;s avg of 10mpg got beat by a diesel VW rabbit truck nuff said I think?

91 explorer 3.73's 4.OL auto and 33's avg of 12mpg...still gutless as hell, but you could take 1st and 2nd for everthing they were worth and make it move,(back in the 10mpg range)till you hit 3rd then it was back to a turd, but normal driving, it was still a turd.
150,000 miles on it at the time.

I agree 4.88's for 35;s on a street truck, 5;13's if it's the 2nd truck.
4.56;s would be ok if you live in the flatlands and it was a street only look at my mud tire truck.

Gotcha! I'll be going with 4.56-4.88's according to what size tire i go with.

Thanks,
Brandon

A lot of people would disagree with that.

i think at this point nobody really listens to his opinions anymore lol

Back on topic has anyone else run 35's on my model truck with a 8" wheel?

I can get some 35's for $650 or 33" Swampers for $600. Personally I would rather have a radial 35" mud tire but if I have to go with 33's it will be a bias ply swamper.

Thanks,
Brandon

I have 35s on 15x8s on my BII with no problems (not sure if that's info you want)...

15x8 will be better than 15x10 if you air your tires down for offroad use (your wheelbearings should live a bit longer, too).

Get the Swampers if you're gonna wheel this truck much at all. I've got Boggers and I'm glad I do. I started to just get any old MT and be happy with it, but I'm glad I spent the extra $ and went with the best.

As far as the 8" wheels, you'll be fine.

As for gears, if you're going 35's, then I'd recommend at least 4.88's, too. I've got 33's and 4.56's and sometimes I wish I'd have gone with 4.88's. I can't imagine runnin' 35's with 4.56's.
