Pretty soon I will be putting a 351 out of a 1990 ford van in the ranger. I was going to put a T-5 behind it at first, but now I am thinking of maybe just using the AOD from the van also since I already have the transmission. That would save me a good bit of money. I figured I would put a shift kit and a manual valve body in it and run a floor rachet style shifter.

Here is the question... I was planning on converting the 351 to carburated for the simplicity of installation and working on it/ future modifications. Now will the AOD trans work with a non EFI motor? Or does the AOD have to run with the EFI computer?

You can run a carb, however based on simplicity, you already have the efi in your truck, tossing in the harness and hooking up a few wires is all you need to get it going. Going carb you will have to bypass the fuel pump safety circuit, use a mechanical fuel pressure regulator and still wire in the sensors, but either way you choose, we're here to help you get it done :icon_thumby:

I know Im going to have to modify the fuel system and I have no problem with that. Im just old school and want a simple motor. The less electronic crap the better. I plan on ditching pretty much everything on it right now including the fuel tank, fuel lines and pump, radiator and anything else not needed. lol. I want to put a racing fuel cell in the bed behind the cab, so I would have to install new fuel lines/pump anyway.

Im planning on putting new heads, cam and other bolt on modifications along with a new intake and carb. ( Im planning on using a holley truck avenger carb ) So as long as the AOD will work I think I am just going to stick with that trans.

So what will I need to make this engine/trans combo work well together?

I am going to find an 8.8 rear end from a ranger to install also. So what would I need driveshaft wise ( its 2wd)

As far as the trans the only thing you will need is the detent cable modified to fit the carb linkage. As far as the driveshaft, that will depend on final placement of the motor...

You think that truck EFI intake is going to fit under the hood of a Ranger??

Hmm, good point, unless a body lift is involved...

This is a pic of the motor and trans in the back of the truck, with all that EFI crap still on it... I must agree that it would be a bit hard to close the hood if i left all that stuff on :icon_rofl:

lol

lol

I guess it would depend on how hard you closed the hood ;missingteeth;

Just as long as you have the TV cable working properly or swap in a constant pressure valve body an AOD doesn't care about the engine. That is actually a strange factory combo i have only seen a few being most had E4ODs. You can be at a crossroads on the EFI stuff though. You can use it as is but if you are planning to do some engine work converting to mass air will be needed or use a carb. Not sure if those truck intakes will fit under a stock hood but it would be pretty close.

aod

is it an aode? if so then it has to have a computer im pretty sure.. but i dont think the aode came out till 93 or 94, if its a regular aod you should be able to just hook it up, etc and your good.:icon_cheers:
