351W Conversion

isn't the 4r70w used in 4.6L applications? if it is it might hold up. if you need OD then look for an E40D..... thats the OD auto that came behind the 351.

there was 4r70w's that bolt up to a 302, which would also bolt to a 351w, made in i think 96 and 97 explorers with the v8 awd system, another down fall to the awd is there is no lo range selector in that year truck

Trouble with the later automatics, like 4R70w, is that they are computer controled. Have to go to something like a Bauman after market controler. Even a free motor can end up costing a lot of money, more than you had planned on.

any early to mid 80's F series with a 300 6 or a 351W with a C6 will have a small block pattern.

its harder to find a C6 for a 429/460 than it is to find a small block C6.

are the C6 & C4 manual? how hard is it to find one?

the C6 and C4 are automatics and they are as common as dirt. The problem you are going to run into with getting a manual transmission is that a smooth shifting transmission that will stand up to a 351 is hard to find and you wont find it for a 4x4. Jeep401 and I have been down this road looking for a race ready manual transmission that you could bolt a transfercase to is impossible to find and everybody I emailed told me I was insane when I asked my question. the best I could find was having an M5ODr2 rebuilt to handle a 351 and that 3 years ago was going to run into $2000 range.

in an RBV an AOD will stand up to a 351, you need a flex plate from a mid 80's Lincoln that had a 351 (this is the only vehicle to come new with a 5.8L and an AOD), an E40D (can be found in any 87+ F150, Bronco, F250, F350 equipped with a 300 I6, or 5.8L and an OD automatic..... any 91+ Bronco with an automatic) but the E40D requires a computer to shift.

the cheapest way to go is to find a C6 or an AOD if you want to go 351. if you go 302 then you can add a C4 and an M5ODr2 to your list.

true but if you was tofind a wrecked truck with good running gear its alot cheaper to swap everything over, then you can scrap or part the rest for a small amount of cash

i have a 351w that ive had bored over .030, new pistons, rv cam, lifters, chain, reworked heads crank and block... 1g invested complete rebuild, and a c4 that i paid 200 for that is suppose to be in working order orig behind this 351w, all ive put back together in the motor is the crank and pistons with rings of coarse...
does anyone have an idea of how much i could get for them? i was going to put them in my b2, but im considering a different option... thanks

Always thought the C6 for a SBF was hard to find, my bad...

Anyway IMHO, as you have said CSyd77, "you do not have the engine yet" and finding a good 5.0L is easier. Get a 5.0L out of a 5-sp Mustang with the computer and harness and it is all a drop in with the adapters or OEM parts if you know which ones; at least my '88 Ranger was.
The carb'd 302 is also a good choice, less wiring, which is a plus, but all of teh mounting and adapters will be the same.

Yes the 351 may make more power and yes you can get a manual if you try (which I like) but the C4 is the easiest.

Thinking on this I believe the C6 isn't suggested for this swap because of the length, too long, check out all aspects before buying.

Why a 351, if just for the look, it will cost you in gas, more mods to the truck and time looking around.

Luck on your decision.

i was going more for the power than the look. since this truck isnt going to be my daily driver i dont really care about the mileage.but, if i cant find a 351W and a 5spd that i can keep the 4x4 ill go for a 302

Don't forget the mid 80's up 90 or 91 Crown Victoria Police Interceptors. They had a 5.8 and an AOD too. Gives you another search option.

Are you absolutely set on having a 5 speed? There are other options if you don't mind a 4 speed...T18, T19, NP435 are good ones and all available in 4x4 versions. They're pretty easy to find and just about bulletproof.

the problem with those is you are back to shifting like a school bus. The ZF is a solid transmission and common...... but it is not a quick shifting transmission.

With the ZF, you have the 5.13 first gear ratio, making it for normal street use into a four speed over drive. Think he need to sit down and really evaluate what he wants most of all, the power of the 351 (can be matched by a good built 5.0), the manual trans or street type shifting. Setting to many peramiters limits too many things.

a 347 with a mild cam run from a 351 SD computer will get you close to the 351 power curve........ run it with a Mustang SFI MAF and you would have more power than a 351 truck engine....... but not the torque...... and not in the right spot.........

I dunno man, I've driven a lot of trucks with the ones I mentioned and they weren't too bad. I figured it was going to be an offroad rig and it's not his DD, so might as well go with what is strongest.
