302 build help

Depends. Is that 425 at the crank or at the wheels? What are your goals with the truck?

to tell you the truth i dont know the difference between hp at the crank and at the wheel. the truck will see the track but i'll also will drive it to work.

like mister 457 bad dad said, 750 would be too big for your application. i've heard of "demon" carbs being ane xcellent carb, and although a little pricey will be worth the extra in the hassle it saves you. like mentioned, a 650 would be plenty, and the only place you'll lose is HIGH rpms, lik 6k+. the bottom end power will outdo a 750carbed engine anyways. unless your running like 6.13 gears and 23" tires or something. lol
building your engines internals will decide how your engine lasts and how much poer it will make. here's something to go for. for every dollar you spend on performance parts, expect to spend a dollar balancing and preparing your engine to handle it. so if you spend 1500 bucks on power adders, expect to pay 1500 for correct blueprinting, fire-ringing, balancing, etc. i'd say to make 450 CRANK HP, aim for a budget of $3k for a budget build, or $4k for a high milage engine.(200,000miles kinda deal)

alright for what you guys are telling me 650 sounds great and as for a demon i heard there good too but i dont have the extra money for the carb and thanks for all the advice jaymegriffiths!

The simple difference is when you measure power at the wheels it is more realistic because through you're drivetrain you have restrictive bearings and gears and weight that steals power. you can minimize this be installing new bearings, running synthetics in your tranny and diff, and making sure your wheels aren't gigantic and your tires are properly aired up and this means your wheel horsepower shouldnt be too much lower than your crank #
crank is a mathimatical calculation using an engine dyno.
wheel dynos dont account for drivetrain losses when calculating power, as all drivetrains have different amounts of restriction and power drag.
so your engine could be making 500 horse but on a vehicle dyno you may only achieve 450HP. to have a 50 horse loss wouldn't be rediculous. try googling stuff and ask your questions carefully to avoid people getting sick of answering your questions. i personally dont mind sharing what i've learned be reading through hours of pages of info about motors, and even from pesonal experience with working on old muscle cars and carborated vehicles.
but people will take you more serious if you show them you'r putting out an effort to figure stuff out on your own, cause if you dont wanna put out the effort to do a little research what are theo odds your gonna be putting out the effort to do an engine swap. i've ben planning mine for over a year now. but im building a high horse high milage engine. and i wanna put it in a 4x4

That's what Ebay was started for. Do a search on 650 cfm Holley's and you'll end up with at least 2 pages everyday. Are they all good carbs ? No. But by excercizing patience, you can end up with a nearly new 650 for $100 (or less) What you're looking for is a vacuum secondary 650. But also know that many newcomers to carbs confuse a dual feed Holley with a double pumper.(mechanical secondary) They're not the same. Most double pumpers are dual feed carbs, but not all dual feed Holleys are double pumpers. And if a carb doesn't look nearly new (you'll learn just by looking at the pics) passs on it, unless you just want it for parts.

I just picked up another Edelbrock 650 with electric choke for $110 on ebay,Thats deliverd to my door.
I'll be the first to say performance wise it will not touch a properly tuned Holley but they are easy to work with plus you can always get your money back out of them when you want to upgrade.
