3.4 swap

The point was that neither the engine (from Ford's Lima line of engines) nor the transmission from the Pinto has anything to do with Mazda.

you could get Ford 2.3 in a Mazda pick up called a Ford courier.

True - the Ford engine was available in the Mazda produced Courier with Ford badging. But there was never a -Mazda- engine in the Ranger.

and the pinto predated the courier.

I think the pinto was the first to get a 2.0/2.3

Shame it never got the European ford twin cam, probably would have spanked a 302 mustang.
Shoulda just had a 351C option.

Well I’m gonna do it when my 2.3 dies only thing I have to figure out is how to custom make a dash cluster lol maybe just stick the whole Toyo dash in I dunno just priced the build it will cost close to 6 or 8 grand not including parts and labor but the truck is special to me so it would be worth it

Personally you would pry be further ahead both in price and keeping the truck intact if you did a 2.3T or even a 302.

But good luck

What are you paying for then? Lol.

IMO the swap seems kind of foolish, especially If you're paying for labor. What's your end of day goal with the truck and your reasoning behind wanting to do the swap?

If youre after reliability.... don't for a minute think that the Toyota motor is any more reliable than a Ford lump... I'm relatively sure @mtnrgr has over half a million miles on his 3.0..

My buddys last 3.0 truck had 360k on it when he got rid of it due to trans issues.. lost every gear but 3rd.. reliability simply correlates with quality & frequency of maintenance (for the most part)

If you wanna 'make people mad' at ford fest.. putting a Toyota motor in it isn't gonna work I don't think. Personally, I'd walk by a Ranger swapped with that motor and laugh (not laughing WITH you, mind you..)

The more traditional (and effective) route to take if you want to 'troll' ford folks would be to stuff a chevy motor in it.

Paying to swap a chevy motor (LS) in it wouldn't cost any more than the Toyota motor, it would net you the same (or better) fuel efficiency, get you MUCH more power, availability & price of parts (especially aftermarket) is way better, subjectively better exhaust note, and they'll run for well over 300k if maintained. The chebby motor would in all reality be the objectively best choice.

Everyone does the chebby motor though..

...so put a Mazda 13b in it. That motor is tiny so it would be easy to fit, it would be super unique.. like.. the only ranger on earth with that motor unique, they sound insane, and it would haul ass. The 13b weighs 100lbs less than the 2.3 as well.. so decent chunk of weight reduction && pushes the trucks f/r weight distro a little closer to 50/50..

Git r dun.

body lift & a 300!

Minor correction:

The 2.5l in the '98-'01 is the end of the line for the Lima;
The Mazda L 2.3 starts in '02 and goes to the '11s.

Mazda put the 13B in their version of the Courier - the REPU (Rotary Engine Pickup Truck) from '74 to '77. (Not many made it East of Rockies)
The truck hauled @$$, but burned gas like OPEC didn't exist... (the 5 speed in '77 with OD helped, but 16mpg in compact pickup and burning oil at about 50:1 - early rotaries weren't known for good seas - l turned me away)
