How much do you prefer the 4.0 to the 3.0? Here's a little background info: i'm 20 years old, an avid hunter, I'm married with a two year old daughter. I have found a 2001 3.0 ranger with opening side doors - 3500. I have also found a 1998 4.0 ranger with no opening side doors for 4000. 3.0 has 140xxx 4.0 has 113xxx. Both 4x4 extended cab.

If I had to do it again....I would get a 4.0. Like they say...no replacement for displacement

i love rangers but if you looking for a family car a ranger is not it. in my personal opinion the gas mileage of the 4.0 is not worth it to me i regret not buying a 4.0. but the 4.0 has power and good torque

Hell I have a family car, she won't be riding in it THAT much. I've been driving a 00 Pontiac Sunfire 4 cylinder, need some power lol. My last truck was a 93 Ranger with the 3.0. I'm just so stuck on the price difference & if it's worth it. I'm wanting something that will last me a long time.

Its worth the price if you get a 4.0L OHV with the pushrods. I'm not a big fan of the OHC ones.

either will last a long time, both are solid engines that have stood the test of time and hard mileage. 4.0 though for sure if you looking for power

Ya I wish I had a 4.0, but I still love my truck. You won't be disappointed with either one, a Ranger will never let you down.

I have a 97 with a 3.0. It was a gas company truck, and they abused it, then totaled it. Then a paint company bought it at auction, and fixed it. Then they abused it and totaled it. Then A friend of ours bought it at another auction, he had it fixed and then let it sit for 3 years.

I bought it, abused it, totaled it, blew the trans up, swapped it to manual and continue to abuse it.

Odometer sits at 187,XXX and the motor still runs fine with no unusual noises. Moral of the story, 3.0's will run forever lol.

I really wish I would have gotten the 4.0, but my 3.0 gets the job done...good gas mileage and its pretty peppy.

I have I 3.0. Id rather a 4.0, but its not that that bad. Gas mileage is barely better, and I mean barely. The side doors though would be a selling point for me... especially with a kid and all the strollers and crap that come with them. I can barely get my dog in the back of mine with the seat all the way forward.

I'm thinking the 4 door is the selling point as well. I'm not sure if I should go ahead and buy the 3.0 or wait on a four door 4.0 to come along

I've had a 2002 Ranger 4.0 with 4 door and now have a 98 4 door with 4.0 and very happy with em both and good strong engines. I didn't get manual because all my vehicles prior were manual and i'm lazy now lol

I've had a 2000 3.0 auto ex cab 4x4 with 3.73 gears since it was new. Dependable? yes. good mileage? hell no. powerfull? hell no. don't forget the 3.0 are flex-fuel engines. if the FF module goes out you're looking at $600+ for just the module which is a Ford only part. there is an aftermarket FF eliminator available for much less.

i kinda wish i sprang for a 4.0 when i bought my 3.0 but a reliable truck is a reliable truck.
