you need to pull one or the other. if you opt to pull the trans., you have to unbolt the engine from its motor mounts and jack it up far enough for the oil pump pickup tube to clear.

I managed to replace the oil pan on my truck with the transmission still attached. I unbolted the tranny crossmember and motor mounts, and jacked the motor up until the oil pan cleared the IFS subframe.
i am having problems getting the oil pan out between the oil pump and transmission shiled. i could probably pry it out... mabey i could just remove the top 4 bolts on the engine and loosen the bottom 2 bolts 1/4-1/2"
it can be done without pulling either, if you have I-beams or not. i unbolted the motor mounts, jacked up motor till it ALMOST hit the firewall, removed passenger side I-beam pivot bolt, disconnected sway bar on passenger-side removed shock, dropped down the I-beam as far as it would go and out the pan slid.....its REAL TIGHT but it works.
we had the same problem with that damn tranny shield......it gets in the way right?? yeah i know....its a pain........whatever you dont force it out because, think about it...how you going to get the new one in without forcing it and wrecking it.
im telling ya...drop the beam
