3.0 needs more power

just out of curiosity since were talking gears when i rebuild my silver bullet i plan on running 305/50R15s, you think the stock 3.48s combined w/ an m50d would do fine or 3.73/4.10 would help since im losing a few inches of tire height from aspect ratio?

I currently have stock 235/75/15 tires would it affect MPG much if I went from 4.10's to 4.88's just to get better pick up?

its an auto. about how much would 4.88 gears cost front, rear? and i hear you realy have to know what your doin to put them in.i also heard that you have to have a diff. spreader for the front sence its pressed in and the case is alluminum??

also a question for someone who has 4.88s. what rpm are you at when your going 45?

with a 27" tire i would go with 4.10's to give you better pull off the line....and to keep your engine up in its powerband where it thrives.

i wouldnt go with that high of a gear ratio with that small of a tire. your going to be turning almost 3,000 RPM at 65 MPH. while you would probably get pretty good mileage, it will get annoying spinning the engine that high all the time. 4.56's are probably all the higher you want to go...although 4.10's really arent that bad for that tire size.

gears are a few hundred bucks per set. setting up a ring and pinion is not something the backyard mechanic can do. its very labor intensive and requires a number of special tools. getting it wrong will cost you a set of gears. most shops will charge a few hundred dollars to set up your gears.

with 4.88's, 33" tires, transmission in overdrive, at 45 MPH, your engine will turn 1,679 RPM.

With 4.88 gears your engine will put much less effort to move the truck from a stand still situation. But it will deffinetly will affect your mileage for it will be running at a higher RPM.
Now depending on the transmission Your truck has you have to determine wich gears will perform better with the tire size You intend to install.
My truck comes with a 5R55E Automatic and 4.10 stock. If I disengage the OD the truck ran at about 3K RPM at 65 MPH with 235/75 R16.
Now with 4.56 gears and 255/65 R16 seems to be doing about the same. But it deffinetly takes off faster from a stand still situation.
I am going with smaller tires for Drag racing.
Any suggestions for a tire size?

thanx sludge i was wondering about that, ill give the 3.48s a whirl since they are in there already but if i find that to not be what i want ill def give the 4.10s a shot. preciate the knowledge one other question since id be losing inches on tire size and gearing down that far ill lose mph but gain a hell of a lot of accel, how fast am i going to have to shift gears w/ the m50d at 300 or so hp lol?

^ and his truck is about as heavy and aerodynamic as a brick shithouse :D

have we tested the properties of said brick shit house.

also the intake and exause gets mixed reviews.... the one thing i can say is how fast it revs up has changed, with the exhaust

drove my 92 2.3 ranger w/ m50d and i see what your talking about, 5th gear is def an overdrive. when i shift gears from 1st to 2nd real hard it twists the engine and tranny mounts and the rear end chirps to the side and it almost sounded like i popped a tooth in the rear end, which of course had plenty of slack to begin w/ i wont lie. for a 4 banger to do this w/ stock gears and run out like that i dont think i will have any problem w/ the modded 93 lol...

Not much you can do with a 3.0 but gearing, exhaust, chip, and small tires but Psshh who wants small tires!:headbang:

exhaust is pointless on stock 3.0 found that out the expensive way my custom intake only helped w/ throttle response slightly. i could see a chip helping some but def gearing pulleys and rockers will help.

First, give her a complete tune-up

Underdrive pulley
1.7:1 roller rockers
Gears
Headers
Synthetic fluids in engine/trans/axle(s)... and t-case if its a 4x4
Programmers
Port & Polish work
Porting/valve work on heads

Some of these are way easier (and cheaper) than others. And remember, none of these parts are going to turn your 3.0L into a monster.
