2wd w/locker vs. 4wd

Also, have you mentioned to your dad that 90% of the Baja 1000 prerunner are 2wd? Least as far as I know. SHow him some vids on youtube.

Those trucks also have extensive mods that allow them to use inertia instead of traction.

Impossible for 2wd to be as good. Imagine being in a situation where your rear axle is sunk in 2 feet of mud while your front tires are on solid ground. Without 4 wheel, you'll be needing a tug. With 2wd, obviously a locked rear is going to be a head and shoulders improvement, but momentum is more of a factor than with 4wd. Also for certain scenarios I disagree with waiting until you get stuck to engage 4wd. There are plenty of situations, regardless of whether you're 2wd or 4wd, where you'd be screwed without keeping some forward momentum.

I'm going to hurt even more, there are times when even 4x4 with
lockers won't get you anywhere....

I have however never seen a 4x4 with lockers and CHAINS immobilized.

I find locked 2WD will do better than an open 4WD in flexing situations but in flat/uphill situations an open 4wd tends to do better.

all i plan on is firelanes and fields, and the occasional shallow mud pit, so that's why i figured the lockers, or once i get my sisters car this summer, i might just weld the spider gears together

I tried mudding with four wheel drive in two wheel drive once right after I got it for the heck of it. The front wheels get bogged down and the rear get all goofy trying to trade places with the front. I was all over the road and finally after almost ditching it I got out and locked in the hubs. After that I might as well have been going down a dirt road rather than a waterlogged one. The front end could fend for itself, rather than having the cart in front of the horse.

Unless you are doing Baja races, 4x4 > 4x2 just about every time.
