Is it ridiculously hard to convert a 1992 2wd ranger to a 4wd?

Well...........you need a 4WD Ranger of similar Generation for parts, and it must have the same engine so trans and transfer case will fit, so you have to ask the question.

Can I sell my '92 Ranger and buy a 4WD Ranger and fix it up the way I want , for less money?
I know it will take less time, but the money is important.

If you have a nice '92 then it will sell easy and for good money, if the '92 isn't so nice.......then what the heck are you thinking in dumping money into it????

Front suspension for both can be seen here: http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/front_suspension.shtml
Finding a Manual transfer case would be best but very hard to find.
If electric then you need to get the 4x4 control module and wiring along with dash switches.

Just to add some more info, the TTB dana 28 or 35 also wont bolt on to a 2wd truck. The cross member is different. You can of course swap the crossmember, but its not a easy one to do. So its not a bolt on swap. Id sell the 2wd and buy a 4x4 if your not attached to the truck.
