2WD, Open Diff - Not as Bad in the Snow as I Expected

The storm was not as big a deal as it was made out to be, though we could still get the ice later. Highways were getting a bit slick by 4:00, and the back roads were getting a decent accumulation. The 300lbs made a big difference though and the truck went pretty well. Motored up our untouched gravel lane without an issue, and that can be a problem because it's a pretty good slope and the turn in is too tight to carry any speed.

It's going to 48 tomorrow so I'm not gonna fire up the load and scrape it off.

I was up in Hershey today and on 322 on my way home I ran across a bit of a backlog at the last hill before Walmart heading West.

There was a big rig stuck at the bottom of the hill, and a 2wd Chevy 1/2 ton stuck halfway up the hill. I was able to hook on to the Chevy with the B2 and tow him up the hill to the top where he could get on on his own. Then I went back in and helped get some for Chrysler sedan pushed up the hill, a front-wheel drive Sprinter van pushed up the hill, and we were in the process of walking a Chevy box truck out when the cinder truck backed in from in front and so we let him make a few passes and then got her over in the other lane where the gravel and ash had been laid.

That was a mess. What should have been a 45 minute drive home took over an hour and a half.

That's about what I had been expecting, but I think I got away before it came to that.

Once I carried a tow strap to get others out, now I have it in case I need a tow!

I was smart with this storm. I got a bottle of burboun and a pile of chinese food last night. I got up this morning, closed all the blinds, got drunk and ate leftover shrimp in my underwear. Its going to be almost 50 tomorrow so all this sludge will be melted before I leave for work and I can just pretend Wednesday never happened.

How did the shrimp get in your underwear? And why would you then eat them?

He was drunk. It all makes sense if you're drunk and hungry.

This message composed solely of recycled electrons. Go green!

Well, that was an unexpected direction......:shok:

Normally a guy won't admit to having a shrimp in his underwear!

Unfortunately a moderator started this.....

I drove 2WD with an open diff for years. They really aren't as bad as people think. Understanding how the vehicle will behave and tires make a world of difference. I've actually gotten around better than FWD vehicles many times.

Agreed.

Yesterday I used the 4x4 twice in the B2 during over 2 hours or driving. All times were uphill, one was an unplowed, untraveled road. The other was on snowpack with a full size Chevy strapped to my rear end. The third I didn't really need it, but the guy behind me was getting impatient, so I did it to get going faster.
