2wd in Snow

There is nothing better than chains when it comes to snow/ice.

Went up in the snow last friday, my buddy followed me in his stock FX4. He got stuck a ways behind me (From where I am in my Avatar). When I went to back up I started to slide off the road. We winched and high lifted and snow shoveled for a long time and didn't really get anywhere. Finally I said fawk it, jacked the ass end up and threw on my chains and walked right out. I then pulled his FX4 out then as he was backing up he slid off the road again and I couldn't pull him out. So again I said fawk it, and busted out a pair of chains for his truck, threw them on, and he walked right out.

Cables are better for higher speed stuff and driving around on main roads and such but up in the mountains I'll take real chains.

I want to get a good set of chains, i have used some from Alpine sports thy seem to be ok. just thy seem kinda weak.
I am looking for on and off road use.
Its just seems to be so many kinds of chains when you look on the web

this winter actually happened to be my first time driving in snow, and i had bought my 2wd 2.9 5spd ranger not too long before that we didn't have too much but we had a bunch of ice and the ruck did great nothing special on the tires just standard A/T tires and stock factory differential, i have a (approximately) 50lb toolbox in the bed with 3 old tires from the side of my house to weigh it down, plus the XXXlbs ladder rack i have, it did great and it does great donuts in the parking lots ;)

Breathing new life into this thread...

So some may have heard of the embarrassment that happened in Atlanta last year, when the entire city shut down because of 2" of snow (Snowpocalypse Atlanta 2014). I was stuck in traffic a while, and ended up going back to my college to spend the night since the roads turned to ice and were littered with crashed/out-of-gas cars.

Anyway, I was thinking of investing in some chains for this year. Since there's only a slight chance that I'll ever need them, I was hoping to find some good ones for fairly cheap, say under $50. Do any of you cold-dwelling members have any advice? My Duratracs did great in the snow last year, but sucked when it turned to ice.

i was there for snowpacalypse 2014... i drove a lawn mower home from work...

4 studded winter grips, I have them on all my vehicles.

I always buy a cheap set of rims from the junkyard and put the studded winter tires on that.

In the case of my Ranger, I kept the stock rims for the winters and run my nice aftermarket 17''s for summer.
