289, 302, or 351?

From what I hear... the F150 trans/transfer case but I do not know the length, I would think the short wheel based Explorer manual transmissions would be OK, again the length overall is important. I have heard that they aren't the best, but if available might be an out.

Measure up engine/trans/transfer individual/overall lengths in your existing setup. Start looking and checking the bone yards for something that will fit your measurements.
Find an F150 trans/transfer and measure them up and see if the length will work in the Ranger and check to see if the transmission mount/crossmember will work too. If it come out of a 302 setup then get the bell housing and all of the attached stuff too.
The fly wheel is different between 289/302 carb/302 EFI, there are different weights flywheels so if the 302 you have is from a manual setup you want the flywheel from that setup and get the clutch disc and pressure plate for core turn in if free.

If you can use the Outside Clutch Slave Cylinder then an early 80's manual bell-housing will work on the block and that will allow the use of different transmissions from other vehicles. I used an '83 bell-housing from a 302 F-150 with a larger trans from a Dodge 1 ton truck but had to use an adapter plate between the bell-housing and the trans.
Maybe with a Bell-Housing you can adapt a trans in too.

So this post has left you with nothing more than what you started with, check out what you can fit and start measuring other parts to see what will fit.

Sorry I can't be of any more help, luck.

Nah i have a better understanding for the swap now, thanks for the info...ill eventually open up a new post once i get everything i need and update yins on my progess, take it easy and thanks again

Does the windsor V8 bell housing bolt pattern match the Ranger auto tranny boly pattern.
If so what has to be done to mate the windsor to the Ranger auto tranny inside?

No, they're completely different. For a V8, use a V8 transmission.

The Ranger trans will not bolt directly to a V-8 SBF.
If you have an auto w/ a separate bell housing, there is a good possibility that the trans will be a C-5 and the C-4 V-8 Bellhousing from a V-8 application will bolt to the trans.
Check out the adapter kit on line and see what the manufacturer's have to say about the trans use.

id use the 302 with some mods to it, i did the same thing and i blew a SVO focus out of the water with a mild cam and 4bbl carb. Not that hard to make a Ranger go fast.

x2 i used a c4 trans with a c5 adaptor for the 1350 case and i put the c5 output shaft in the c4, best way to do it if you want to keep stock x-fer case and tranny mount in stock location. I still have my complete setup for sale 289v8, c4 car bell 141 T flexplate (great for clearance) and c5 adaptor and the 1350.

and id recommend using a Edelbrock 500cfm if you use a 289 or 302 stock or mild. Mine ran GREAT out of the box and lots of power and easy to tune. Great carbs i dont care what anyone says. Very smooth! Get the offroad carb kit , my truck never stalls on hills or anything and my buddy has the same setup and his works the same way. Dont believe what others say because most have never tried it! PM for questions.

My ranger has a 5.0 EFI with an AOD that came out of a 90 Mustang. It is stock and it runs extremely well.

That is the best route IMO, but the C-5 wasn't a really common transmission only being offered in a RBV for 2 years.

I still haven't figured out how I was lucky enough to not only track down one, but one that was already converted. :yahoo: I just hope it works...:dunno:
