12ga deer slugs ain't that bad, it is more of a shove to a rifles slam. Probably more force but it doesn't seem to hit you all at once.

The 91/30 probably gets most of its rap from the square steel butplate. The left side of mine cut into my shoulder when I shot it, it is much more comfortable to shoot with the sythetic stock and a more normal looking rounded rubber buttpad (it is still pretty hard rubber)

OP:

243 and 270 are two somewhat diffferent beasts. 243 is an excellent varmint up to deer cartridge (I would still use it hunt elk and moose, but it wouldn't be my first choice), whereas a 270 is more of a pure big game round, theres nothing on this continent you can't take with a 270 (and that includes the big bears and bison, don't let anyone tell you otherwise, people seem to think these animals have grown bullet proof hides and need a 338 lapua to safely drop them.....they don't. Keep in mind that the most common cartridge used to eliminate the plains bison was the old 44-40, which is pretty pathetic).

So what you need to do is figure out which cartridge does what you want it to do. The next, and probably most important step is finding the rifle that fits you best. Try everything you can get your hands on to see what make/model is most comfortable for you!

i love me a 270.. its just a sweet shooting gun. it feels good to shoot.
243's are alright.. but if you're plinking.. get a 223. agreed.

Pffft....

Don't get me wrong, the Remington 700 isn't a terrible gun....

But it's no Browning...

I've shot both, and hands down I love the Browning A-bolt (now the X-bolt). I love the factory adjustable trigger too. And the safety is easier to thumb off. A little more spendy than a Remington, but IMHO, it's worth it.

I would love a Savage... not practical at all but it would be fun to have a reason to get modern high power rifle.

I prefer savage and browning..
I know it's a little different game but I like my savage 110 30-06 more than my browning a-bolt 30-06.

The Remington 700 is not a joke; it's a great gun no doubt. Just not my thing.

I just really don't trust Remington enough to give them the money they think they are worth even if I had it.

I sent back my Remington made Marlin 336 multiple times because they failed basic gunmaking 101 type things... like feeding, ejecting, headspacing, fitting wood, assembling the gun itself. It was a joke and it kept going back to Ilion and it kept coming back more and more screwed up until they finally gave me back my money.

The Savage Edge rifles have surprised me, I know that their quality (Savage) had gone downhill in more recent years to a degree, but when the Edge came out, I was surprised that it actually seems to be a pretty well-made rifle.

And I will admit that I have a certain fondness for the old Savage model 99 rifles.

I have found that it depends on the gun, not the cartridge as to the recoil. My step-dad had a 243, shot it all the time, loved it. Bought my mom a 243, she shot it once, refused to shoot it again. He grabbed it, fired a round and sold it the next day because it kicked too hard. Went through 3 more rifles before he found one she could shoot without loosening teeth.

i have a savage 111 bolt action that shoots a 270..the only rounds i put through it are the hornady sst balistic tips and have used it for white tail deer in virginia and parts of Pennsylvania.. i think a 270 is a great gun its a flat shooting gun and with practice you can be accuate i can shoot about a 2 inch group at a hundred yards and can shoot all day when you get a rifle go into bass pro they can be very helpful if its your first time and they will tell you the same thing a rifle is only as accurate as the scope...i have shot many deer with my 270 and there is no tracking to it like when i bow hunt..they just drop
