2011 Ranger 2.3 liter gas mileage!

I bought my 2011 Ranger About 2 years ago .only 64,000 original miles 2 owners .its a 2.3 liter automatic and it gets lousy gas mileage! I changed the fuel filter first thing still not great ! What can I do?

What do you mean by lousy? And have you looked at your fuel trim numbers?

Some real MPG information would be helpful...

I believe you should probably keep your fuel consumption expectations realistic... These little trucks aren't good fuel misers.

There are a bunch of things that probably need to be considered before fuel trim numbers... at least I think so.

Proper tire inflation

Wheel alignment

Rolling resistance

Has the tire size been changed affecting your calibrated odometer?

Also... your driving habits. You want to get good mileage... you're gonna have to drive it like you want the best mile per gallon.

Once you get all that in check.. then start looking at engine performance data

"Lousy" is not a useable fuel economy spec. With this kind of question please give us numbers, or don't ask at all.

my 2005 2.3/manual and 3.73 gears with 355,000 miles still gets 26-27 on the hiway.

I have a 2.3L manual and I can squeeze almost 31 out of it during the summer if I try real hard. With my normal driving I get about 27-29 on the highway. Around town with the air conditioner on it gets about 23.5 -26 mpg. The automatics should be about 2-4 mpg less.

The best I've managed to get is 45 mpg when driving from Gardnerville to Stockton. But, 100 miles of that was mostly downhill.

My 2002 Has 90,000 on a rebuilt 2.3. I have the 5 speed auto and 4.10. I can't get LESS than 20 mpg around town and I can squeeze 23 on a 100 + mile highway trip. When my trip odometer says 300 , I'm looking for a refill. I could probably do better with a ( needed) front end alignment and also lose the ( un needed) 275-60-15 rear tires but it looks cool with them.

The automatic/Duratec combo sucks. They all got 4.10s in the rear (which increases engine rpms at speed) and the auto robs power/fuel economy on top of that. Nobody with a Duratec/auto gets more than about 25-26mpg, while the Duratec/manual trucks typically get closer to 30mpg. I was getting 30-31mpg with my Duratec/manual truck when the weather was warm and 27-28mpg during colder months.

Those numbers assume a perfectly functioning, stock truck. Add bigger tires, a lift, or mechanical issues, or a lead foot and the numbers drop.

My 2011 with tow package and 410 gears got 25.5 on a trip from Texas to Nashville. Later I got 27.7 with just me on a trip from Abilene, Texas to Dallas, Texas, and I ran with the big boys in the fast lane. Most was done around 75 MPH with the AC on. What do you call lousy?

I average 26 on pure highway trips. But taking the kids back and forth to school in the dead of winter I've gotten as bad as 12mpg...

adsm08 is right...without numbers any MPG could be lousy. Is the tail pipe sooty? Do you keep filters changed? How old are the spark plugs? Our 2.3 is computer controlled so it could be a problem. My 2011 automatic with 2.3 has 95K miles and is the base model fleet type. Purchased in 2015 with 70K miles from a Ford dealer, so I do not know its history. We lived in the country then and every trip was 50 miles or more so MPG was important. People who say they get high 30's to 40 MPG with their Ranger are usually very bad at math. Driving habits are a big contributor to bad MPG also.
