2010 Ranger rear brake issues...

OK, that's a bit of a lie. It's a 2010 Mazda B4000 but for all intents and purposes it's a Ranger.

Last week the rear brakes started to squeal pretty bad. I brought it into the dealer for a look see and lo and behold, the rear brakes are down to the metal while I still have 30% on the front.

I have only 42,000 KM on the truck and it's only 20 months old.

So now I'm fighting with the dealer and Mazda about this. I don't think the rear brakes should be worn before the front, and definitely not at 42K.

I now discover the rotors and pads are so new to the market there are no after market parts available. The parts need to be bought from Ford/Mazda at $300 for the rotors and $107 for the pads. The front pads will be $125. HOLY CRAP!!!!

During my phone conversation with the dealer I also find out the rear rotors are smaller than the front and the pads are a softer compound. Mazda expects only about 48-50,000 KM per set.

I am so pissed about this right now. I wish I could just set the truck on fire in the dealer's lot. If I didn't still owe for so long I would do just that. Claim temporary insanity.

Anyway, I'm wondering if anyone else had/has issues with their Ranger and if the folk here has any indication as to why my rear brakes would go in such a hurry.

Well, first off, your pads in the rear should be made of the same material as the front--sounds like Mazda is screwing with you.

However, if you haul anything of any kind of significant weight, that will definitely wear your pads down, as the additional weight will cause more wear.

Lastly, however, I believe that Mazda didn't properly dial in the bias from front to rear; as such, because the rear would have had more bias than the front, the pads on the rear wore quicker than the front (which makes absolutely no sense, since 60-80% of braking in a vehicle is done with the front brakes).
