2005 shut off and will not start

I am posting this for a friend of mine, He is working on a 2005 ranger with a 4.0. The truck was turned off and it will not restart. The fuel pump is running but there is no spark. He has tried spraying it with a bit of starting fluid and all it did is backfire once. He has a Snap On 2500 scanner as well as a Vantage to test sensors if need be. He is unsure where to start and as the battery died when the truck was cranked for too long and due to that the codes have been erased. I have never heard of the problem and I was wondering if anyone has any insight into the problem.

if he has no spark it could be the coil pack check the wire that goes to the coil pack you can check the coil packs
