I have a 2003 Ford Explorer with the 4.0, 4wd, 93,000 miles, and the trannhy fluid has been chnged at 60,000 miles. when traveling around 45-50 and you floor it, the tranny downshifts to second and squeals until it upshifts to third. the first time i noticed it i was accelerating on a highway, not floored but into the throttle 3/4 just going through the gears like normal. the nxt time a month later or so i was towing a 4500 pound trailer(i have to tow package and everyting is properly set up, i do not use over drive) on the freeway(60mph) up a slight hill enough to cause a down shift to either 3rd or 2nd and caused the whine till it shifts out of whatever gear it was in. now it seems to do it with about a 3/4 throttle when about to shift to 3rd from second(4000-4500 rpms) it can cause a squeal similar to squeaky brakes for just a second. No idiot lights or rough shiftling though. I have heard about some sileniods and 2-3 gears shift problems in this tranny, any help would be great

what kind of tranny you got in the there? be a good idea to change the fluid now. suppossed to change fluid every 30K miles, or more if you tow. Unless you use synethic.

Not much towing, 75mi a year, 5 speed automatic and i'm pretty sure it is conventional

it must be the 5r55. suppossed to change the fluid every 30k. some places still do it the old fashioned way just drain it, this only changes 3 or 4 qts. out of the 14-15 qts. possible. Find a mechanic that will do a total fluid renew. Its over twice the cost but well worth the money.
