I am about to purchase a 2002 Ranger xlt 4x4.
4.0 sohc/ automatic/ code 97(4.10)axle.
air, cruise, tilt, but no pw/pl. Thought all xlt's had those?

Anyhows it has a LOT of miles for an 02 (almost 140,000)
but is in top shape, and i can get it for $5000.

Any weak points on these trucks?
Trans.? engines? etc.

Ive got a '90 Bronco2 with 180,000 + on the clock that runs fine.
And my son's '96 Cherokee has 150,000 and runs like clockwork.

Just not familiar with these sohc 4.0's.

Thanks in advance!

well with that amount of miles, i would epect the tranny to have been replaced since its an auto.

when you test drive it, drive the hell out of it to see how it shifts. make sure there is no slippage. if its a private seller, tell him not to run the engine before you get there and if he does, just leave and tell him youll come back when its cooled down.

ive had a few buddies get ripped of like that. they say, "i just filled it up with gas for you"! now hes stuck with a pos porche.

so far my truck hasnt had any problems but my Check Engine Light came on today for the first time. its seemed fine though so im gonna scan it.

good luck

Good point.

It is a dealer, but i kinda know the guy, and he seems reputable.
(ive heard good words in the area about this dealer)
Even gave me a carfax report, and offered to answer any questions on it.

The trans didnt slip, but when i kicked it into passing gear it seemed to stick for a second before shifting back into "drive".

I probably shouldnt have done it but i put a deposit on it, as it seemed like a really good deal and i didnt want to lose it.

KBB.com sez its worth 10 grand even with the miles.

Mebbe i'll do another test drive before plonking down my 5g's.

sounds like a good plan. since you have a deposit, test drive it as much as possible until you come to a smart decision.

theres a fellow TRSer selling his 2002 fx4 a manual tranny and t-case with pl pw and everything you can think of. just thought id trough that out there in case you guys live close to one another.

Just curious though. How many miles are the 4.0 sohc's good for?
And the trannies?

I know thats a loaded question depending on how you drive.
The 4 spd auto in my '90 B2 has over 180,000 with only 2 fluid exchanges.
Most people told me the auto's in B2's are only good for 100,000. so i guess ive been blessed thus far.

not sure on the sohc. i think this check engine light might be something minor on my truck. im at 77k and i think shes got plenty more left in her.
the manual tranny is pretty tough especially compared to the auto tranny. they are prone to go out after just 60k.

today i towed my buddys 928 porche which is heavy as hell. i towed it with a dolly up and down the hills here in san diego and it did better than i expected. i was able to accelerate up hill in 5th gear but then again i am running 33s with 4.88 gears.

The 5 speed automatic (5R55E) in the truck you're looking at is the strongest of all the automatics. I would suggest looking at the fluid as well if you haven't. The fluid should be a red/pink and not smell burnt.

The 4.0 is a good motor. Just keep up with regular maintenance.
