Im needing to know what years that an automatic transmission will fit my 2000 4.0 year 4x4 ranger. ALSO will a tranny from a explorer work. Is it specific to a 4.0 engine?

My understanding is that only 2.9 and 4.0 OHV have matching bellhousings. Anything 2.9 is not going to be as strong or matching other than being able to physically bolt up, so you need a 4.0 trans. There is supposed to be some interchangeability with the 4.0 SOHC, something about an extra or missing bolt hole.

Yours should have the 5R55 automatic. Ideally that’s what you want put in because of the computer controls. Those are found in Rangers and Explorers, but there was also a 4R44 and 4R55 so you have to make sure of what you’re getting.

What is your transmission doing? Most people don’t realize the bands are supposed to be adjusted from time to time and the O-rings for the reverse servo are known to fail. It may be possible to do a little work and bring a little more life to yours if it isn’t completely dead yet.

I’m also moving this to the appropriate forum…
