ok. in my 1st gen truck i put a second tank in the bed. it's an aluminum tank out of a boat. 48x20x8 inches tall. fits perfectly right behind the cab. i have the filler coming out of my topper as i didn't want to cut into my truck bed. gas line goes into a marine 3 way manual valve. i fill the aux tank, use it til it goes empty, then switch to the original tank for the gas gauge. gives me about 42 gallons/800+ miles between fill-ups. works very well and the tank was $50 in excellent condition. i like it!

that's the best part. plan my trips so i put just enough gas in to get me where i know gas is considerably cheaper and then fill it up there. drive from Duluth, Mn. to just over the Iowa border with just enough gas to get me there (about 10-12 gallons). fill up completely in Iowa where the gas is usually 15-20 cents cheaper per gallon, thanks to their lower state taxes. gets me all the rest of the way to Indiana, and almost all the way back to Iowa. i completely fill up again in Iowa.
also gives you enough gas that you can afford to pick and choose where and when to fill up, and plenty to drive thru the night until more stations open back up in the morning.

and costs about the same as my old chevy suburban with the big gas tank. but my ranger is way more fun to drive!
