After driving my 88 ranger for 6 months now I have a good idea of what I want to do to the suspension. Being that I use it for mild trail use and alot of highway I figure that I wont need anything more than a 31" tire. Remember that this is my DD. I plan on doing a 2" washer lift on the front to level it and for the rear I was planning on just using some explorer leaves. I then thought about removing the factory blocks on the rear and getting some Chevrolet drop shackles so I wont have any axle wrap and better flex. I have 3:73 gears in my D28 and 7.5, I'm pretty sure they will hold up to my 2.9 but I wasn't sure about the 2.9 surviving on the highway with heavy 31's.

What do you guys think?

I ran 31s with 3.73s and a 2.9.... Err, I mean 2 2.9s.... I'm not sure what exactly was the cause of death of that motor... Do it.

im running 31x10.5 bfg mudz, 2.9 V6 and 3.73 gears and its sluggish on the highway. 5th gear is useless. I even have pacesetter headers on my 2.9, Im doing the 4.0 swap this summer and re-gearing to 4.56

Thanx guys. I was thinking 4:56 gears because I plan to see if a 2.9 could survive offroad abuse. I was wondering if my suspension idea was a good? I want to see some good flex! :)

My 2.9 has very low miles on it, and it still makes pretty good power. I plan on going with at least 4:10's so I'm pretty sure it will work.

The 2.9 is an alright motor hard to kill but to that point its gutless. I would go with the 4.0 swap and safe yourself the hassle. The chevy drop shackles is a great upgrade i have no done it yet but its a thing to do on my list. You will want to do the swap when your 2.9 starts to tick real bad like mine. im all for the 4.0 right now i found my motor just looking for the M5OD trans. 3.73 to 4.10's won't be much of a difference, 4.56 is probably your smarter choice.

I agree completely. But I'm trying to make this ol 2.9 last as long as possible. When Time and money allows I plan building a stroker 4.0 with a tom morona kit so I can smoke all these 3 liter fags in 4th gens. Someday..... someday :)

haha, time and money is everyones issue. Always not enough money, i got lots of plans for my truck this summer. im upgrading to a 33" KM2 tire.

I have a 1994 3rd gen ranger and I'm looking at putting the 2" spacers listed at the link below to level the front out with the back. My question is do I need to do anything else with the front/rear suspenion to go along with these. I'm not trying to put these on there, go wheelin for a while and then mess something else up. Any and all help would be great.
