2.9L v6 ticking at start up ?

Mine too for 3-4 seconds sometimes. None after that. I wouldn't worry about it.

ok i won't worry about it then , when i pull the engine for the swap i'll pull the valve covers and check for sludged and clean up the heads and replace the gaskets , thanks yall for all the info and replys

The best way to keep a 2.9 from ticking is to not start it.

I had lots of slug in my valve cover on my 2.9l, it would tick like a b,astard on high way or wheeling.
so what i did 3 days before my oil change was dumped a one liter of ATF in the engine. Ran it for 3 days going easy on it, did my oil change and put shell Rotella 15w40 in it with 3/4 of Lucas Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer. it still ticks a bit in the bush but I'm hard on it. i will do a oil change in 500 km and maybe try and put 20w50 in it with one full liter of the Oil Stabilizer.

My old 87, that my dad bought new, always ticked when cold or after sitting for a while, but the tick went away after a few seconds. My dad always used Castrol gtx 10w30, I switched to Castrol high mileage 10w30 in the summer and 5w30 in the winter and the 5w30 seemed to let the engine lightly tick all the time, where as the 10w30, just on start-up. And I don't know if it matters or not, but the oil pressure gauge always showed toward the high range. So, I guess it had good oil pressure?
