2.9L external fuel Pump problems...

i have a loud humming noise comming from under the truck, and i started it and went underneath, and i noticed the noise was comming from the in-line fuel pump on the frame. i felt it, and i think this is what is making the noise. has anyone else had a problem with these fuel pumps?? i just dont want to spend 100 bucks on a fuel pump, and find out that it isnt what is wrong... thanks

all electric fuel pumps make a humming noise as long as they make noise it's working no noise not working

this is a LOUD noise = Not Normal... and i noticed today that when really get on it, it studders. im leaning toward a new fuel pump...

i changed the external fuel pump last night, and didnt fix the problem. still makes noise, and when i am accellerating or trying to pass someone, it studders/ acts like its running out of fuel. anyone????

does this still have a pump in the tank??

what is the fuel pressure like?

Have you taken the little vacuum line off the back of the fuel pressure regulator (FPR) and see if it is damp or fuel dribbles out...if it does it shot. still can be shot without fuel dribbleing out, but if it does it is sure fire indicator.

I was just wondering that. what year is this truck that you are working on?

yes the fuel filter has been change, it was the first thing i did. i changed the external fuel pump, and the one is still in the tank. i checked the fuel pressure it was a 42 with the key on, and 35 with it running. i took the vacume line off and no fuel dribbled out. and this is an 86.

I had the same problems with my 87. Basically those years are plagued with the worst fuel delivery system to ever be on a Ranger. Start checking everything from the in-tank pump and work your way up to the fuel regulator. Even if you changed your filters check them again, you might have a hole in your tank somewhere letting dirt in. You have two filters most likely like mine did so make sure you check/change both. One is under the seat before the fuel pump and the other is after the fuel pump up farther on the frame rail.

I drove mine around like that for a few months trying to figure out what was wrong. The day before I sold it I changed the filter and found it was clogged with mud, even though we changed it when we bought the truck 9 months before. Ran like a top and I got top dollar for it.

Did you change both fuel filters? The cartage and the canister filter.
