2.9 to a 4.0

O wow. Haha. Alright thanks for the heads up. What aftermarket headers should i use? So pretty much the hardest part of the swap would be the wiring harness?

Also i heard that the 4.0 will give me better fuel economy, is that true? And why is the 2.9 so crappy on gas?

The 4.0 doesnt have to work as hard. I used the entire under hood harness from the automatic donor 4.0 ranger everything pretty much feel into place wiring wise the ecu is located in the pass side kick panel I unbolted it took it out and use a wooden dowel to push the harness out of the firewall from the inside small plug is for the heater you shouldnt need that.I then just plugged it into the big white round plug. The only wiring I had to do was to repin 2 cannon plugs for rear lights and fuel tank they were the same color just diff location in plugs.I pretty much broke even on my swap donor truck cost $300 sold tranny 4 $125 junked the body with the ol 2.9 $90.00 "still have the aftermarket heads" and $50.00 for the aluminum wheels I did have to by flywheel starter and clutch also about $150 altogether whole swap cost about $200

Ok. I got a question, with the 4.0 motor out of an 92 explore could i use the wiring harness from a 92 ranger that had a 4.0 in it? And also is there aftermarket harness's for swaps like this?

I'm pretty sure you could use the harness out of any 2nd gen ranger with a 4.0,Id grab the sensors also.Aftermarket would cost to much but then I'm cheap!

You are going to have to splice no matter what, so it doesn't really matter which harness you get. Just make sure you the matching ecu.

Disciplerocks

If he says you'll have to splice then listen to what he says hes 1 of the members who helped me,my swap was 91 into 89 ranger.

Granted I have only done it once, but from my understading, there isn't a 100% plug and play swap. There are just years that are easier than others. But I wouldn't worry too much about it. The wiring is pretty damn easy either way.

This is true I had 2 splice the manuals reverse switch and manual NSS wires into the auto harness but very easy to do.

Great. Haha. Well im not the best at wiring but ill give it my best shot. Thanks for the help guys i really appreciate the help.

Haha not yet. Ran into some money issues. But i was trying to get as much info as i can before i get started so i dont run into any problems. I do have a question, how long would a swap like this take?

there isn't a 100% plug and play swap.

'90 to '90 is 100% plug and play. My most recent 4.0 swap was with a '90 BII and '90 Ranger 4.0. Everything plugged in as if it was made to. 100%.

But I wouldn't worry too much about it. The wiring is pretty damn easy either way.

Exactly. It is very easy. The most you'll have to do is switch a few wires around on the cannon plug, and maybe splice one or two wires. It's a very easy swap.

This is a hard question to answer. I could do it in a weekend, like two days max. Someone without any experience pulling motors, maybe 4-5 days. BUT...this all depends on what you run into. Stubborn bolts, lack of tools, etc can all delay the process.

Everything bolts in and plugs in, so all you do is pull the old out, and put in the new.

Time

Took me about 2 weeks but we didnt work on it every day "Iv a bad shoulder & rain" & had to wait on parts I bought off ebay, I actually had the motor in and bolted up in about 2hrs + or - wiring and trouble shooting took a little longer.
