2.9 timing issue

Working on a hesitation problem.Changed a leaking intake manifold gasket which required removal of the distributor.Removed spout connector and timed to 10*BTDC.Replaced spout and timing jumped to 25*BTDC.Retimed it,same thing,unhooked the battery to reset computer and did the timing again,but same thing - timing jumps to 25* at 800rpm.What could be causing this?

Appears that your doing this correctly.
set base timing without spout plug at 10deg BTDC.
this puts the ECM or engine computer in a set mode , no automatic timing changes allowed.

when you replace the spout plug this allows for automatic timing changes to take place, controlled by the ECM.

So everything is very normal
