needing to replace the automatic in my 88 2.9 2 wheel ranger
does the 3.0 have the same bell housing bolt pattern as the 2.9

No it doesn't. You need to find a trans from another 2.9, a 2.8, or a 4.0.
 
thanks trying to narrow down my search for for the correct transmission
