Agreed. The '98 is basically the worst possible option for the '84. Much better with an early OHV 4.0 or even a carbureted 302 (can't believe I just said that).

oh... well im really gettin disssed on for gettin this motor... everyone is sayin its a bad choice... once he said a 97 and on the list he said it was a 98... so im not sure what it is...

sorry if i jacked the thread...
 
any SOHC 4.0L is a bad choice. Look for a push rod 4.0L from a 91 - 95 (atleast) explorer or a 4.0L from a 91 - 1998 ranger.......
 
If looking at a 4.0, I'd narrow it down to a 91-94 (EEC-IV) engine.
